repost from lif-what would u do?

DH's brother and sister in law called us saying that they bought a laptop for their fathers birthday and they want us to split it with them. We really didn't want to spend that much, but now we feel guilty like we have to? Would you suck it up and spend it or would you tell them, sorry we can't afford that right now and we would buy something on our own?
TIA

I agree.

That's crazy. They should have ASKED YOU FIRST!

Ditto on Stephanielyse.

How presumptuous, to already buy it and then ask someone else for money. A lot of money, for that matter.

I'd graciously decline, and let them know you cannot swing it financially. But in the future, you would be interested if they asked you first and you were able to compromise on the idea.

That way, they understand that had they asked you first, they would have been better off.

This happens to me, but the other way around. My sisters let me come up with the idea, get it, pay for it, and then throw me a few bucks and take credit for it.

if you can't afford it, don't do it. it was incredibly presumptuous of them to buy it without even talking to you guys about doing it first.

my only other suggestion is (if they're ok with it) kick in what you were going to originally spend and take credit for getting the gift with them.

Definitely decline and tell them you can't afford it! I agree that's rude to do that to you without asking first.

if they were ignorant enough to buy it PRIOR to clearing it with everyone else and then demanding you to chip in, they're idiots. say you don't have the $ and if they whine, remind them that they bought it before seeing if you could chip in!

Thanks for your replys. DH and I decided to go off on our own and buy him a digital camera. We also paid for half of dinner. So we spend about $250. I think thats good enough for a birthday, and maybe now they get the hint that we would not like to split things in the future. I even made a remark on how I already know what we are getting them next Christmas!

So overall we saved about $200 bucks and hopefully they get the idea now.
