Repost from NWR: Need your help

I'm having some problems with my bank, specifically tellers who cannot input money and post balances correctly and I may be looking to switch banks really soon.

Where does everyone bank? And what do you like about the bank? (internet accessability, money posting to account ASAP, many bank locations throughout NY, friendly service, etc ...)

I need to find a bank that is going to do a 110% job and not make me go home and do all the work for them!

I have two... Washington Mutual and Bethpage Federal Credit Union.

It depends upon what your needs are though. I have Washington Mutual for the no fee ATM but BFCU offers better rates (not for profit) on car loans and mortgages for members... also they tend to pay a higher interest rate on savings accounts.

Washington Mutual also offers a higher rate on certain savings accounts with a minimum... for example $25K, $40K etc. It's helpful if you are saving up for a house/wedding and have to keep in money in cash (liquid) but want to take advantage of the extra interest.

Hope this helps.

Hi Lisa!

I have two also. My paycheck goes direct deposit to Nassau Educators Credit Union. They have my car loan too. But they have very few ATMs. I always use Washington Mutual ATMs (no fee.) I still have an account with Washington Mutual. I hardly use it, but I was very happy with them. I didn't want to move my direct deposit, but got my car loan through the credit union so it was easier. So, I highly recommend Washington Mutual.

I have my accounts with Citibank right now but our joint is with Commerce, which I will be fully switching to after the wedding.

Citibank is great but it's very 'big bank' in its mentality and functioning. Lots of unnecessary fees, etc. But, I know that I can always find an ATM, and it's one of the most profitable banks in the world (read: not folding anytime soon).

Commerce so far has been fine but we really haven't used it too much so far.

HSBC has been pretty good to me so far. Checks clear quickly, a wide variety of services, etc. My only problem with them is that their Customer Service line calls go to another country, and while they speak English, it can be difficult to understand them if they have a thick accent.

Agreed!

But other than that they are fine.

Citibank for us too..I never go to the bank itself, just ATMs and online. They are big though and if you call the customer service number you get another country.

Bethpage Federal Credit Union..
I love them, they cash checks UPFRONT, no holding, even out of state, and I have NEVER had an issue with them in 3 years.

I used to use HSBC, I had an issue at least every 4-5 months .

FH uses CFC..or whatEVER they are now( Roslyn I think) and I DEPLORE them! They took 60 days..YES SIXTY DAYS to cash a $5000 check , and he had this account for years at that point, they dont have debit cards unless you mantain a $2500 checking minimum..STAY away from them!

I also heard good things about Washington Mutual.

I have a few accounts for various reasons.

Citibank savings (PMMA) and checking. I only opened it since it was the bank closest to my law school & apartment when I moved to NY. The Chase was about 2 blocks away. LOL

Chase - mortgage is with them so I pay that automatically from the account.

HSBC - got a home equity line of credit with them and never had any problems

Washington Mutual - no fee business checking account. I closed the Citibank Business account since there were just too many random fees.

Citibank Private bank savings (PMMA) and checking plus some 'ready credit' account and an 'overdraft' acount that I can use if I bounce a check. It's for direct deposit of my salary. This is an account through my law firm though. I am not sure if I could have opened it off the street.

ETA - I forgot the most important one.

ING - the wedidng money is there. Internet banking only but it's linked to my checking account.

I have never had a problem with any of these banks. I use Citibank most often (on-line bill payment) and the only issue with them is the fees for small business bank accounts. I presume there are fees for personal accounts too but I don't pay any.
