Repost Greek and Jewish Weddings

Girls, I am so confused. FH is Jewish and I am Greek... Although he feels more connected to Judaism then I do the Greek religion. We are trying to combine the two. We are getting married by a reform Rabbi, under a chuppah, and we were going to combine the stefana. Can anyone give me examples of how they combined the two traditions?

I'm not in exactly the same situation, but it's close. FH is Greek, and very religious. I'm 'Catholic', and very not. So same as you, we decided on the dominant religion for the ceremony, and also it kills two birds with one stone because Catholic church recognizes marriages performed in Greek church, but Greek does not recognize marriage performed in Catholic.

As I'm sure you're aware, the Greek church is pretty steadfast, so the ceremony is what it is, and there can be no blending of the two. No vows, no unity candle, readers, nothing.

Personally, and this is just my opinion...when you have a mixed religious couple, there's really no way to blend it. Since you've already said that you're not as religious as FH is, it would probably be best to just have the jewish ceremony, and come to terms with that. Besides, I highly doubt an orthodox priest would come to perform at a jewish ceremony.

Thanks for the options... Actuaally the Rabbi we are using is willing to perform some of the greek traditions... like the exchange of the crowning. I just wasnt sure HOW to do it and what from Greek we should include... We are getting married at the RH.

Hi,
I think its great that the rabbi is willing to incorporate some of the greek traditions. I know there are certain things that are done in the greek ceremony that are different from other ceremonies.
Try to keep in mind the certain points of the ceremony and discuss them with the rabbi. Check to see in what order things need to be done, there are plenty of sites that you can go on to read up on it.
You could probably do the exchanging of the rings the way the greeks do. You could also find out from the rabbi if you are allowed to have the Lambades at the ceremony. Then, as you mentioned, there is the stefana exchange, then the ceremonial cup and then the procession. Maybe the rabbi can incorporate some or all these things in between all the jewish traditions. I think as long as you let the rabbi knows what the traditions are he will be able to judge how to incorporate them in.
Best of Luck & Merry Christmas!
Mary
