REPOST: Help: I got a weird phone call: wedding invite

My boss and his wife have become good friends of mine over the years but recently they moved across the country and my role in the office has become negative so both issues have but some tension on the relationship. My boss' wife's mother lives with them and thru the years I have also gotten to be friendly with her (but haven't seen her since last Jan)

I just got a call from my boss in his home office in the midwest. Little did I know his wife was also on the call. They wanted to know if her mother was invited to the NY wedding. I flat out said no, but was happy to extend the invitation. The wife got all wierd, said um...okay and they hung up.

*** am I supposed to do now?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?
I know they need someone to watch their kids and I originally said to them years ago their kids would be invited before we made a decison to not invite children across the board. How could they just call me up and say that. Am I wrong? Should I have sugarcoated the no. I feel like an A$$. Remember friend or not this is my boss.

Okay I'm confused... you said no, but yes?

Meaning she wasn't originally invited but could come anyway?

I blatently said no bc I was really taken off guard. I did then say if she wanted me to invite I her I would, but the wife then said dont worry about it. I feel really wierd now

Wow, that is awkward...

The only thing I can suggest is sending the mother an invitation right away.... although the damage may already be done.

But I don't understand why they think she would be invited
