repost....gift for destination wedding

My brother is getting married in Jamaica in July. So far his wedding is costing all of us a couple thousand. The room is cheap for the 4 days but since its 4th of july weekend the airfare is insane. Now, they had an engagement party a while ago and they got money and gifts then. The fiance is also having a shower and is registered so we are getting something for that. Are we required to really give them a gift at the wedding? My family had a hard time paying for the trip as it is and they are wondering are they also supposed to give them money for this? Its all confusing and Im probably going to give a small gift anyway but my mom and uncle were curious whether they were obligated to or not after having to spend so much to go to the wedding.

yeah i totally hear you on the crazy cost of destination weddings, one of my bm's couldnt be a bm in one of her good friends weddings b/c she honestly couldnt afford it....

this being said, yes, you should still give a gift for the wedding, i know that its ridiculously expensive but thats one of the drawbacks of a destination wedding

If I was having a destination wedding I wouldnt expect my guests to give a gift. If your going to give a gift, I dont think it is really necessary to give a gift as large as what you would give if it was a local wedding. But if you feel uncomfortbale NOT giving anything, something small (maybe enough to cover your plate) would suffice.

I would not do this. I would still give a small gift. However, I actually thought your being there is supposed to count as the gift to the couple being married. I could be wrong though, and like I said I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it.

my co-worker is having a destination wedding & i thank my lucky stars everyday that i was not invited.

i have heard that proper etiquette says that you are not suppose to give a gift at a destination wedding because of the added costs. if the bride & groom where paying for your airfare & rooms, then you should give a gift. but if they had an engagement party & having a shower then i would not give a gift.

A close friend of the party is having a desitintation wedding in Hawiai and do to paying for our wedding and all we decided not to go. I know my brother is going and they are planing on giving a gift if we were to go i was thinking of buying a gift not giving money, but since we are not going i will give money as a gift anyway.

ITA, my cousin got married in the Domincan Republic and he told us straight out 'your gift for us is coming to the wedding, please don't get us anything'.......i think they have to understand how much money you are putting out to go to the wedding.....and especially with the economy, he should be thankful your going. I think maybe just talk to them about it just so theres no surprises

i personally would feel uncomfortable going without a gift...however, bc of the added expense of the trip i wouldn't feel like i had to give the standart rate for a wedding. I would maybe just bring a little gift (pic frame or something maybe) just so i am not coming empty handed.

Now if you guys were going to bring a gift how much would you give? Just an idea. Its not so much me because I dont think they expect a lot from me. My job pays peanuts and they know Im planning a wedding as well. Its more my parents. They gave a pretty generous gift for the engagement party and are getting them something off the registry for the shower so my mom wants to know what she would need to give. She doesnt want to look like shes being cheap. However, shes had to pay for her and my stepfather and my sister to go to this wedding and just last year she was out of work for a year on comp and got hardly any money. So its been tough. I told her Id ask on here so she could get an idea what other people would do.

Re: repost....gift for destination wedding

I've been to several destination weddings and have always given a gift. One was in Maui and it cost us a small fortune, but we gave a gift. I dont see it as an obligation to travel...I more see it as a great reason for a vacation...so I would never show up without something

I've been to a destination wedding in Shutters on the Beach in Santa Monica! it was a bit pricey specially staying in that hotel! we still gave some money! even though we were paying a fortune with plane ticket and stay ...I don't like going empty handed!
