HI everyone- My son will be 3 months next week. He currently drinks about 6 ounces every 3 1/2 hours. (35-36 ounces a day). He was 8 lbs 5 ounces when he was born. At his 2 month check up he was 13 lbs. Is there an amount of formula that is considered 'too much' and the doctor will recommend starting rice cereal earlier than the normal 4 month mark? Or do doctors just advise to keep increasing the formula as the baby needs (even if that means he'll be drinking close to 40 ounces a day)- and hold off on the cereal till 4 months ? I will ask my pediatrican when i see him next week, i just wanted to get some opinions from you ladies! Thanks!

Re: Rice Cereal
My son drank about the same amount as your son is drinking when he was that age. I started him on the rice cereal at exactly 3 months and he went CRAZY for it! My doctor actually told me that once he started drinking that much formula then it was fine to start with teh cereal so I did.

Re: Rice Cereal
I think I experiemented with rice cereal around 3 months, but she really had no interest. I'd say try it. The next time we tried at aroun 4 1/2 months, you could tell she was totally ready, opening her mouth for the spoon and really enjoying it.

Re: Rice Cereal
I think I remember with Luke that they said when they're taking 40 oz, the recommend starting. That's what happened with him - he was constantly looking for more - and we started him on cereal around 3 months. Tara never got up to that much so we started her around 4 months.

Re: Rice Cereal
My son Nicholas started Rice cereal early too, because hus formula wasn't enough for him We gave him only a little at first and he wasn't as fussy in between bottles...See what your DR says at his next visit. Good Luck

Re: Rice Cereal
I was just talking about this yesterday with my Mom!!! Cassidy will be 3 mos. on the 20th. She was 7lbs 15oz at birth and is now 14 1/2 lbs!! She drinks 7ozs. per feeding and has 5 feedings a day, so that's 35 ozs. That just seems like so much! I'm going to call the Dr. Monday and see what they recommend.

Re: Rice Cereal
When Kiera was about 3 months she was drinking about 30-35 ounces a day. The doctors had us start her on cereal and then add in fruits. Now she takes 2 feedings of cereal and fruits and drinks about 20 ounces a day.

Re: Rice Cereal
I was told to do one tablespoon for a few days once a day, then two, then three, when she was taking three tablespoons once a day for a while, then I could go to three tablespoons twice a day. Right now she takes 3 Tbsp. and a jar of fruit for breakfast and 3 tbsp and 1/2 - 1 jar of veggies for lunch. For dinner she has the leftover veggies from lunch and 1/2 jar of fruit. Mid morning, mid afternoon, and before bed she takes 7 - 8 ounces of breastmilk or formula. She is almost 7 months. Hope this helps!

Re: Rice Cereal
OK, well I called Cassidy's Dr. today, and they say to start the on rice cereal either at 4 mos., 14 lbs, or when they are drinking 32 ozs. of formula. So, Cassidy starts rice cereal even though she's not even 3 mos. yet!!
