So my wisdom teeth situation has come back with a vengeance, and I fear that it is now unavoidable, and that I must get my two right ones taken out. I am swollen, cut, teething, and miserable.
So I mention this to my job, who does not offer me dental, that I will need to take time off in order to get this done.
I am given a laundry lists of dates I am not allowed TO GET SURGERY on, because I have the nerve of conflicting with vacations. Including a full week in early June, i.e., the MOST LIKELY TIME I would have been getting this done, because the part time administrative assistant will be going on her SECOND full week vacation in two months.
Wow. I would love to work 25 hours a week and get two weeks of vacation in two months.
To say I am pissed the EFF off right now is the understatement of the year. In my almost two years at my job, I have never taken a full vacation. I wasn't allowed to go to my family reunion because everyone else was away that week, and I had to do the catalog and hold down the fort. I took off 3 fridays to have a 3 day weekend at least to make up for it. I took off one day for a funeral, one day because I was throwing up, and then 3 days because the doctor said if I didn't take a vacation I was going to like die of exhaustion.
Now, I am STILL catching shiz at the prospect of taking ONE DAY off this summer, for a wedding, because god forbid it is interfering with everyone elses vacation. I was asked to come in for half the day, in my dress and heels. Now I need surgery, and I'm being given blackout dates for it.
Please tell me why I am the ONLY person in my office that is not allowed to take vacation time. Really. I would love to know. I'm furious, and in agony, and would love a new job right about now.

Re: Ridiculous!
OMG Ali that's just awful!!!! What is wrong with them???!?!??!??!?!?!
As annoying as wisdom teeth surgery is, it's a pretty quick recovery, especially if you do two (one side of your mouth) at a time. I got two out my first summer in law school and the other two during winter break a few months later.
I don't understand how your job can forbid you from taking off for non-elective surgery on certain dates. You'll have to schedule with your oral surgeon around his/her schedule and then your job is going to have to honor it. It's not a vacation. It's SURGERY for gosh sake!!!!
I don't know where you work, but I'm ready to give them a piece of my mind!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GRR.
Sorry you're going through all of this!

Ughh. That stinks. I'm sorry. Thank God I had all 4 of mine out when I was in college and still under my parents insurance. Hope it all works out and they stop being so evil.

Ali, really. Put your health after your co-workers' vacation time. Where are your priorities, girl?
Seriously though ... sorry you are going through this. That's some balls on their part.

Ugh! That *****. Mine are coming in right now too, one appears to have stalled (awesome). The orthopedic surgeon said when I was 14, and I quote 'they are practically in your cheeks, what idiot told you those would ever come in'. lies! lol. i let mine just come in bc i cant handle the headache of the surgery. do they really need to come out?

I've learned to just bang out these days. Fawk them. Really and truly.
Jobs really dont give a shite about anything-including their staff-as long as theyre getting money.

Re: Ridiculous!
If you need to get it taken care of, just do it. It's not your problem that you have a medical condition, that if you don't get taken care of soon may turn worse. You could easily get an infection that would require to be out of work even longer. This is not a simple tooth ache.
Although you don't have dental insurance, your medical insurance may cover most of the costs related to the surgery. Have your oral surgeon send the info to your medical insurance for payment, before you pay him/her.
Feel better!

Re: Ridiculous!
I actually looked into the my medical covering it, and they don't. The only dental surgery that is covered is if there is an oral tumor or cyst that needs to be removed, or if I was to get punched in the jaw and needed corrective surgery.
BUT, my insurance does cover up to one abortion per calender year, so as long as I have that benefit, I'm golden!

Omg Im so sorry Ali
Wow, I remember when my wisdom teeth were coming in, there was no stopping the pain and saying 'you gotta wait bc people are on vacation'....omg if you need the surgery you have to get it. Wow its like they overly rely on you for everything.... thats a good thing that you are the glue that holds everything together at work- but you are also not paid like an owner to have all of this stress thrown on you.
Thats not fair that you have to work around everyones vacations. Thats not right. Ali, if you have to get the surgery- you have to get it. They really need to stop throwing everything on your shoulders and throwing a guilt trip on you. If they need help that bad, then tell him to get off his lazy a$$ and do your job while you are having surgery!!!!

Re: Ridiculous!
Are you a member of any labor union? I would threaten them with that. Or, you should just call them from the hospital and say that you were 'rushed' there in the morning (when you really had those dates booked all along).

Re: Ridiculous!
I'm sorry...it's bad enough to have to go through the oral surgery! And paying for it!!
I would contact your oral surgeon that you are using and see when you can make the appt...hopefully it works out not be one of your blackout dates. But, yes, I do think that is ridiculous!!!

Don't ask for the days off. Just say, I'm having oral surgery on May 25 and will be taking 3 days off.
