i asked this on nwr but i figured i'd try you gals since some of you may have done it recently. i need to get my ring appraised and also have the setting checked b/c i think the stone is loose. i'm looking for a good place in manhattan preferably on in east midtown or upper east side. i bought the ring in va so i can't go back there! thanks!!!!!

Not in the City, but in Mineola I think. It's called the Jewelry Judge. They do appraisals and they will check your setting. I have had all of my stuff appraised there. He is an appraiser not a jeweler, so you get an accurate figure. It won't be low balled because a jewelry store will think you are trying to sell it to them. Also, tell them what you need the appraisal...like an insurance appraisal.

I had my ring appraised at Macy's in Herald Sq - I think it's on the 8th Floor. You stay with the ring the whole time and they explain everything to you. The cost depends on the value of the ring. I wouldn't leave my ring anywhere, so I was very happy with their service.

thanks for the suggestions. at macy's, do you have to have bought the ring there? and no, i'm not wearing it right now i'm paranoid!

Definitely Macy's herald square will do it for you.. i wouldnt go to a place where you have to leave it there. and dont forget to bring any papers you have... gia cert. and stuff
