Ring Appraisal

Does anyone know of one I can go to get my E-ring and Band appraised without paying a arm and a leg? I need to get insurance on both. Peferrably in Nassau County or real close to it. TIA

Your FH didn't get one when he bought the ring?

I'd go back there and ask first -- that's where I got mine.

He did for the E-ring, but I still need one for the Band. I also know the e-ring value went up with the rising prices of gold, so I just want to get a new one for both and insure them.

I went here:

Lana's Jewelry Appraiser
29 Hicksville Road, Massapequa, NY
(516) 308-3590

I lived close by and they had great reviews in the internet. Went there it was quick and easy and they actually took 10 bucks off the price they told me on the phone.

Re: Ring Appraisal

i got mine done in the RXR Plaza (the 2 round glass buildings across the street from the Nassau Colosseum). I think she charges $125 for anything up to 1 carat, $150 for 1-2 carats ... something like that, at least. she was insanely nice

ETA: that was for the e-ring only, not the band

they say you should never get it appraised at the place you purchased your ring since they can lie to get you to pay more. DH had that problem with the jeweler (the jeweler's appraisal was $5000 more than the real value and the guy overcharged DH ... luckily, we worked it out in teh end)

We went to :
Barry Block
320 Old Country Road Suite 103
Garden City, NY 11530
phone: 516-248-8130

He was recommended by Fortunoff's several years ago and then by friends recently when we had my e-ring done. He was right on what our jeweler said.

We went to the Jewelry Judge in Garden City:
320 Old Country Road Suite 103
Garden City, NY 11530
phone: 516-248-8130
fax: 516-248-5477

He has hours by appointment only. He was very personable and explained exactly what he was doing the whole time. He also complimented my FH on his ring selection and quality, so he really enjoyed him!

Re: Ring Appraisal

I just recently went to Gennaro Jewelers on Bedford Avenue in Bellmore (right off Sunrise Highway by the LIRR). It cost my fiance $115 for the appraisal. We got two notarized print outs of the appraisal, which includes all the specs of the stone, 2 pictures of the diamond and setting, and tons of other information! Well worth the money!

Re: Ring Appraisal

Just a question, do they allow you to watch your ring being appraised? I don't want to hand over my ring to a stranger and not see what he/she is doing to it the entire time. I've heard too many horror stories of diamonds being swapped in the past or on tv or somewhere!

Just curious....

yeah, most places let you sit there the entire time (about half an hour)

The jewelry judge does it right in front of you and explains every step. He never leaves your sight with your ring.

Yep! At Gennaro, the ring never leaves your sight! The gemologist, Todd, sits behind a glass window while the appraisal is done so you can see everything!

I wanted to get my ring appraised by an independent appraiser ... I just felt better that way :)

I had my ring appraised at my jewelers as well as Macys. I went to the one on Herald Square, but check to see if the Macy's on LI have an appraisal company.
They are not expensive at all and worth it. The ring never leaves your sight.

Yes, my FH and I stayed in the room the whole time and watched everything he was doing :)
