i got mine appraised in nassau (in the RXR Plaza building, the two round glass buildings across teh street from the nassau colisseum)
most places charge about the same: about $100 for diamonds up to 1 carat about $150 for diamonds from 1-2 carats about $200 for diamonds more than 2 carats (that's for the center stone only ... you could have side bling and that doesn't count).
def get your ring appraised - mine was actually worth LESS than what DH paid ... he ended up going back to the jeweler and getting a nicer diamond as a result.

I went toi Macys Herald Square. They have an appraisal office upstairs. They were highly recommended to me and i would recommend them to everyone They were very through and my ring appraised for almost double the price :)

THIS...I heard that the appraisal place upstairs from Macys is a good place to go. A family friend made my ring (he has his office in Manhattan) and he told me that Jewelers can mark up or down any appraisal. If the appraisal is not realistic the insurance company might not give you what the appraisal says. He said he even hears of Jewelers appraising them lower than what they are worth so you think you didn't get a good deal and don't go back to the place you got the ring from. If you really want to know what your ring is worth, you should go somewhere that does not sell jewelry. They do not want your business other than telling you the true value of your jewelry.

I would search in the yellow pages for a place that just does appraisals. Is it like a gemologist or something that could do it also?

we always go see the tree at Rockefeller center--- so we made our trip for both reasons. You could wait and do that!

I also went to Gem Evaluation located in the RXR building across from Nassau Coliseum (its easier for me to get to than going into Manhattan). I heard it was better to get an independent appraisal rather than going through someone at a jewelry store.
The lady (Theresa) was very nice, she explained everything as she was doing it and her prices were very reasonable. 100 for up to 1 carat 125 for up to 1.49 carats 140 for 1.5 to 1.99 carats Here is her website: http://www.gemevaluation.com/
She recommended insuring the ring through our house insurance provider or Jewelers Mutual.

Most local jewelers that are GIA certified will be able to do it, the place I work at part-time does it but we are on the queens/brooklyn border

Does anyone have a NON diamond engagement ring they've had appraised? I have a beautiful emerald that I'd like to get appraised because FH and FFIL keep referencing how it was $$$ but I don't know where to go!
