Ring appraissed for exactly what I paid for it from Tri County.
The guy told me that my band sells at Fortunoff for $3500-$4000. It was $2800 and I paid $2500. I went to get it appraised yesterdayand he told me that it is worth no more than $2500. Should I say something to the jeweler?

I would! Diamonds should appraise for more than what you piad! Your jeweler (from your other post) seems like a real ***!

I would just let it go. It would be a completely different story if it was appraised for less though. Edit: Are you talking about your wedding band or your engagement ring?

I would, I also had the same problem at tri- county getting my ring appraised. FYI- see an independant appraiser.

Usually they guarentee the ring will appraise for x more than you paid.
Who appraised the ring? NEVER get it appraised by someone that sells jewlery. (aka a store) This is because they want to compete, and sell you on what they have. Try Jewlery Judge, or Theresa Beltrani in EAB Plaza in Uniondale.

I agree, dont get it appraised where you bought it. Go to the mall and use a reputable jeweler

Don't go to a jeweler at all for appraisal! I know for a fact that since Fortunoff stamps their rings they know if it was bought there or not and it affects their appraisal value.
Go to the Jewelry Judge in Garden City... they do not buy or sell they just appraise. They are certified gemologists and master valuers.. an appraisal only costs $70 and takes no more than a half hour and they give you an extra set of papers for insurance purposes. 516-248-8130. www.jewelryjudge.net

Mall jewelers are not the most reputable either. I would go with Mr Hostility on this one. Those two are in the business of appraising and nothing else.

First I;d make sure you had it appraised somewhere reputable, and if you get the same results, I'd be upset. My ring appraised for $5k more than FH paid for it. My sis got hers at the same Jeweler and hers appraised for about $5K more as well.

I agree... it should be appraised for more than you paid for it. On the other hand, you will not pay as much for insurance.

I got it appraised at another jewelry store that sells jewelry. I didn't get it in written form so he didn't charge me anything. He took about five minutes to look at it and asked me how many carats it was. He said it was worth maybe between $2200-$2500. He was just estimating though, now that I think of it. He told me some stones were better than others...but again it was an estimate. How far off could he have been on the appraisal?

I agree. My FH got my stone from a friend of my dads who's a diamond dealer and then got my engagement ring band at a different store and went to a completely different jeweler and they appraised it for $7,000+ more than he paid for it.

I would talk to the original jeweler that you purchased the ring from. Hopefully he will do the right thing and maybe give you some $$ or a credit.
As long as you love the ring, I would STOP worrying about it because there is nothing you can do.
I know that this will probably piss people off but I would NEVER in a million years think of buying jewelry from a Flea Market. So you live and you learn.
I forgot to say I am sorry that you have to deal with this. Good Luck

BEWARE and get a different opinion from a different jeweler b/c my FH went to a place and they lowballed his figure A LOT. My dad told him certain places do this b/c they think you're trying to sell them the stone and if they lowball it maybe you'll sell it to them for less.

Your ring is supposed to be appraised for more than you paid. When you bought the ring you should have gotten the certification for the ring and the diamonds. If you didn't then it wasn't ever certified and therefore what happened to you happened. Sorry to here about your misfortune.

Re: Ring appraissed for exactly what I paid for it from Tri County.
Can someone explain to me why a ring should be appraised for more than its purchase price?
Assuming you paid a 'fair' price, the purchase price should be pretty close to the appraisal value....
