I am looking for a place in LI that is not too expensive to get an apprisal done on my E-ring. We are working on getting Chubb Jewelry insurance and they said it is better to have an apprisal done. Iam curently in Upstate NY and would like to have it done the next time I am visiting my folks. I got a price of $75-$100 up here and I don't know if that is a good price. Also can you let me know if any of your places did the apprisal in front of you and if I am not being way too nosey how much it ran you.
Thanks in Advance Michelle

Re: Ring apprisal
Do NOT go to a jeweler to have your ring appraised. You need to go to a place that specifically does insurance appraisals. When you walk into a jeweler and tell them you want an appraisal, they'll give you the price that they would pay for it (much lower than its actual value), because if they appraised it at its actual value, you could turn around and tell them you want to sell it to them for that, and they'd be stuck paying face value for it and would never make money off of it.
There are plenty of places that appraise jewelry for insurance purposes only. And they generally tend to err on the side of appraising it higher than its value rather than lower.

Re: Ring apprisal
I got mine appraised at the Jewelry Judge in Garden City. They are an indepedent appraiser, not a jewleler. THey charge by carat size or approximate appraisal price (i think...FH paid)!

Re: Ring apprisal
i got my appraisal free when i bought the ring.. most places you buy from will give you an appraisal. you tell them that its for the insurance policy so they give you the correct value

Re: Ring apprisal
I second the vote for jewelry judge and also recommend jewelrs mutual for insurance. If anything happens to your ring, you can go to the jeweler of YOUR choice to have ring fixed/replaced. This is not hte case with many insurance co's. Check it out!

Re: Ring apprisal
Thanks butterfly91804 I just had another post on this.I had called Chubb up and there were very Rude. They said they could not insure an item under 300,00 unless it was a floter off of a policy. I contacted jewelrs mutual and thet were awsome....very nice to me. I was just worried because I had never heard of them before but now I feel 100% better since you mentioned them

Michelle -
The other good thing about them is that coverage begins the day your application with check is postmarked. Meaning that if you are super paranoid like me ( ) you know you are covered immediately and not from the date that someone decides to enter you into the system.

Re: Ring apprisal
that is very interesting about the jeweler giving a lower price. my ring is an antique, including the diamond, we were really suprised when the ring appraised for less than we paid for it. it could have to do with the 'antique' market, but i think we will get it appraised again. i guess it can't hurt.

Re: Ring apprisal
I also went to The Jewelry Judge in Garden City.
I think I paid about $75 (that was almost 2 years ago).
That price sounds about right. A good appraiser that I know of (who is also a GIA certified gemologist) is Theresa Beltrani at Gem Evaluation Lab in Uniondale. http://www.gemevaluation.com/index.shtml
My Dad and I used Theresa for appraisals when he was looking for a diamond for his now fiancee. (She is a 'strictly business' type of person, not really the warm chatty type, but she gets the job done well.)
Good luck!

Barry Block and Deborah Villepigue are both in the Garden City office of The Jewelry Judge. I went to Deborah, but they are both great at what they do.
The phone number is 516.248.8130

Re: Ring apprisal
ladies be sure you get the best appraisal price avaialble, insurance may be more per month, but if it gets lost or stolen, you get back what you paid and then some.
Macys 34th st gives the highest appraisal value from what i was told from ladies who have been to both macys and jewelry judge.
I myself went to Macys and dh & i are extremely pleased at the appraisal we got. If you have a good stone, you will get an excellent aprraisal amount.

Re: Ring apprisal
we did a lot of research on this. there are 5 major appraisal associations. They are listed on the GIA website. this is the same GIA that certifies the 5 c's, but they do not appraise. but on the GIA website ,they list the various appraisal associations
one of the associations is located in new york. http://www.appraisersassoc.org/directory/index.htm
on the associations site , they explain the various certification titles. and if you search on their site for new york and gem/jewelery.you will see 29 appraisers. so it seems like a select group.
we used edward lewand. he is located in both nyc and long island.
its been a while, but i think the cost was 200.he appraises it(in front of you) before you set the stone, and again AFTER it is set , to make sure you have the same stone.
even though we already had a GIA certificate, he confirmed our diamond matched the certificate's details. he did his review 1st, then wote down the various 4c's in his opinion. we then showed him the official GIA certificate, and his grading was the same as GIA.

Re: Ring apprisal
you should also always have it appraised from other than the person you bought it from!
