ring guard question

Ladies,

My e-ring was a little too big, so we had a ring guard put in it 2 weekends ago. I didnt want to resize it just yet b/c I wanted to wear it in the winter and see what happens to my finger size... figured this was a good temp. solution... it was perfect... now it is like loose, and it's hard to explain, but the guard spins along the ring itself and i'm afraid it's scratching the white gold.... do you know what i mean? it's hard to picture...

did this happen to anyone else??

my ring was too big and did the same thing, but with the guard on it was way to tight. i got tiffany nubs put on and that helps a lot. it still spins a little, but i'd rather it a touch too loose then too tight

This happened to me, but I then had 2 small balls soldered inside the band, they are called 'shots'
They make the ring fit, then they can be removed later if your finger swells.
Most jewelers do it.

Re: ring guard question

It sounds like the guard needs to be tightened. The suggestion given, sizing balls or shots, is really the best temporary sizing solution.

As for waiting for winter, keep in mind that your finger shrinks with the cold, swells with the heat...so if the problem is that the ring is too big, it'll only be looser in the winter.

I asked my jeweler about having my ring sized and he said the best month to have it done is in May or October because that is when our fingers are at their most normal size and not swelling from heat or shrinking from cold.

just curious, how much do these little sizing balls added to the inside of the ring cost? They dont ruin the ring when they're taken out?

thanks!

I have balls!!!

Oh, I am in a silly mood. But I really do have balls--in my ring.

They are great! I was told they take some getting used to, but I adjusted right away!

I have some type of service plan at Bailey banks and Biddle and it includes removing and adding balls!!!!

ME!!!!!!
Happened on my platnuim ring and
DESTROYED the band
You must have a good good good guard put on.
Once I did it never moved
but I had to go to aq much better jewler than the guy who original put it on for me
The guard needs to be thicker than most

YES DITCH THE RING GUARD ASAP!!!!!

The ring guard is meant to be a temporary solution - it will scratch your ring!!! It scratched my platinum ring pretty badly!!! I have engraving along theband and did not want to resize it and destroy the engraving but the ring guard scratched my ring. My jeweler then put two little balls in and they work perfectly!! They are actually very comfortable and can be removed at any time with no damage to the ring if done by a professional.

I'm sorry my camera doesn't have a macro lense so i cant take a pic but FM me if you want more details.

I hope this helps!!

Can you explain these balls better?

Re: ring guard question

They are two balls that go on the inside of the band at the bottom that hold your ring in place. They were uncomfortable for me- 4 1/4 ring size-instead they sized my ring to 4 1/2 and flattened the bottom of the band-doesn spin anymore-I got my ring in January and our jeweler didnt want to make it too small b/c of the summer, since then no problems

Re: ring guard question

how much should sizing balls cost?

I was at a jeweler this weekend and didnt have enough time to get it done anyway, but he wanted $55 for the balls or $45 to resize the ring... i thought that was cheap for the resize but expensive for the balls -- what do you ladies think??

Re: ring guard question

that sounds about right for the price for the balls.....if the main problem is spinning then i would def. get the balls put in but if its just big try the resizing first

Re: ring guard question

I have bigger knuckles, so when my ring was sized, it was sized to my knuckle, this way I could get it on and off. But when it's on properly, it's too loose. I had a ring guard, but it broke from putting on and taking off my ring. So I went to Claire's and bought ring snuggies (mentions above). They are like small pieces of clear tubing that have a slit in them. You slide your ring through the slit and it makes your ring tighter without scratching the ring or digging into your finger. And they come off easily. I highly reccommend them. ~~Kim

Re: ring guard question

so funny you posted this today

i had a ring guard put on the day after we got engaged (my ring is a half size too big)

it scratched my ring and just yesterday, after 6 months of wear, the thing actually broke and i removed it myself

i bought a good jewelry polish and any scratches came off from it (thankgoodness)

now im not sure what to do but i just saw someone postd ring snuggies and i will be looking out for those

i am hesitant to resize my ring. i dont want them to have to cut it off me if i gain weight when im pregnant

Re: ring guard question

You should just get it resized, the ring guards lose their shape and they end up doing nothing expect scratching the ring...

Re: ring guard question

Hi, if you are worried about it scratching your ring, you can get a different type of ring guard. There is the one that you have, which is the one that gose straight across, and there is the one where at the bottom of the ring, the jeweler puts 2 balls. The balls are attached to the ring, and if you feel like your ring is getting too tight, you can just file them off. I like the balls better. They are also less noticeable. I don't even think your jeweler would charge you to put them on.

I second these! They are great. I used them for almost 2 months until I was able to get my ring sized. Not a scratch!

You can get them at Claire's in the mall - a pack of about 10 is a couple of bucks. THey are a different brand name than what was posted, but if you ask at the store, they'll know what you are looking for. They have a few sizes in the pack, so you have to find the one that works for you.
