Ring scratching up?

Ring scratching up?

Is it just me? But my setting happens to be platinum and my ring keeps scratching up? I thought platinum was stronger than white gold, and would not scratch as much? Mind-you, it's from everyday ware. I take it off to do house work? Can anyone suggest the best way to clean it?

Since you're scratching it you can't clean it to get it off. Whenever you go in to check your setting and prongs, get it polished and bye bye scratches!!

i don't think you can prevent it (haha my FH's engagement ring is SO scratched up)... but just take it to the jewler and they'll take care of it

My ring is also platinum and I have had it for almost a year. I have taken it once to be polished since. It's due for another polishing in a few more months.

It definately scratches but my jeweler said to not get it polished to often because it takes a layer off everytime. You can do it just before your wedding so it looks great and shiny.

Don't worry, it is going to scratch.

White Gold is Stronger then Platnium!! My FH wanted to get me Platnium but the jewelry guy who he happends to be good friends with said that Platnium is more softer then white gold thats why its scratches easily!! I would ask a good jewelry store on what to use to clean your ring, I got a special cleaner for my ring from the store! Good Luck!

Re: Ring scratching up?

Platinum scratches easier, but not b/c it's weaker.
It's actually stronger, your Platinum ring will not wear off in time, whereas with gold, in time the gold will wear a little and thin.

Regardless of which you have, it won't be noticeable enough to make or break you.
Just get your Platinum ring polished right before your wedding so it can look shiny and new, and then maybe every year or so. This is what I'm doing with mine

Platinum is much more durable than white gold.

STRENGTH. Platinum is a much stronger metal than gold, so much so that jewelers who work with it usually have special tools to accommodate it. Platinum heads are becoming popular for diamond solitaires because of their general strength, and while they are much more expensive than their white gold counterparts, they should wear longer. Platinum is also harder to scratch, so the jewelry does not need to be polished as often. However, one drawback is if you need repair work, you may find it more expensive, or find it harder to find a jeweler who does platinum repair on the premises.

Platinum is stronger than white gold. White gold is sometimes called 'harder' than yellow gold (not platinum) b/c of the nickel in it, but harder is not always better-white gold is more brittle than yellow so you have to be careful with it as it can break easier. That is why heads for stones are rarely white gold.

Note on white gold (I worked in jewelry for 5 years): another thing to keep in mind with white gold is that gold is yellow-the way they make it white is to add alloys such as nickel to it. Unfortunately, over time, the alloys can break down and the white gold will start to have a slightly yellow hue. This is even more true as you approach 18k and 20k gold. Platinum is generally 95% pure and the alloys in it are not going to change its color. So, if your ring is white gold or platinum, make sure to get a band to match it or you may find that they are slightly different colors several years from now.

Some jewelers may try to talk you out of platinum for a couple of reasons-they don't carry it or they don't have the tools to work on it.

One jeweler did make a good point as to why he doesn't carry it though-if you get in an accident sometimes they have to cut off your rings and the ring cutters carried by medics won't cut platinum, so they'd have to cut the finger instead! (I'm still chancing it though :EM06:)

Re: Ring scratching up?

Thanks for the info. We purchase both my Engagement rings and wedding bands (all platinum) from the same company so they would all match, including the diamonds on all three peices. They are from a company called, Hearts of Fire. When I go back to pick up my last wedding band I will ask them about a clearner. I didn't just purchase any kind, can you recommend a brand? And where I may purchase it?

Re: Ring scratching up?

Good point JULYBRIDE444, my mom gave me my grandmother's wedding ring for my marriage and used to be white gold but now it has a gold tone coming through (it doesn't look like gold) but just a little bit. Especially when you compare it to my platinum e-ring. Fortunately, I am not wearing it with my e-ring, I got one to match. I am wearing it on my right hand.

Re: Ring scratching up?

Some cleaners are 'gentle' and that cleaner is designed especially for pearls, emeralds, opals and other porous, soft stones. If your ring has emeralds or other soft stones, you'll want to use that.

Otherwise, any jewelry cleaner is fine. I'd still take it to the jewelers once in a while, the movement of the ultrasonic cleaner helps clean it better.

If you want to, before the wedding, take your ring in and ask them to steam it after it's been in the cleaner, then put it in a box till the wedding. If they have a jeweler on site they can do this...it makes them look beautiful b/c the hot steam blows all of the dust off it!

Edited to say: you can buy regular jewelry cleaner just about anywhere-any jeweler, target or other such store, or dept. store that has a jewelry section should carry it. Even hardware stores sometimes have it for some reason. Gentle cleaner is often only available at jewelers, but sometimes you can find it elsewhere.

Re: Ring scratching up?

That's excatly what I will do!! My jewler has a man in his shop that does the jewlery work and cleaning. I will definalty o there the week before, have it cleaned and steamed. I know the jewler likes us to be present when he does any work on it, because he wants us to be sure that he is not switch the stone around. They are very reputable and accomodating. I will definalty follow your suggestion, and have them cleaned and kept in a box until the wedding day!! Thank you all for the great suggestions.... Everyone here are always so helpful and willing to share
