Rings Dipped

Anyone getting their engagement ring dipped before the wedding?

what does that do? I have a bunch of really bad scratches from camping and kayaking that I need to get smotthed out. What does dipping it do? Maybe I should do that?

I didn't have it done before but I've had it done to both my rings. Came out beautifully.

I thought you could only dip white gold?

My rings are platinum and before the wedding I had my e-ring polished and it came out great. Polishing plat gets rid of tiny scratches, etc, and just makes it look like new.....

My mom's eternity band was yellow gold and she had it dipped and changed to white gold. Came out beautiful. You know who knows all about this? Somethingblu! Sasha works in the industry.

My e-ring is platinum and my w-ring is white gold. It doesn't matter what the rings are. Polishing won't get out deep scratches.

Oh...I had no clue! My ring didn't have any deep scratches...the one or two I had came out with a polishing.

I had my e-ring (white gold) dipped so it would match exactly with the band, and it came out great! I had it done at Zales, just b/c that's where we got the bands.

But the dipping will get out the scratches? They dont' bother me on a daily basis, but next to the wedding band, you can really notice them.

I have a silly question - can i get a ring dipped that has pave diamonds all the way around....and how much does dipping cost on average?

I am at the Tri County Flea Market.
It looks beautiful.

They dip your ring in either white gold or sterling silver to super shine your ring and give it a new clean look.
It covers all the scratches and worn areas.
If you do not want to dip your ring you can steam clean it there too. you will be amazed at how it looks.
I does not harm the diamonds or stones at all.

Re: Rings Dipped

I just recently had this experiencethis past Saturday. I had my moms ring repaired. It was white gold and 50 years old. They dipped it.

At the same time they adusted my e-ring and therefore had to buff/polish it. They asked me what each metal was because THEY DO NOT DIP PLATINUM!!! My e-ring is platinum. They also use a different kind of buffing or polishing on platinum due to the density of the metal.

There is no such thing as white gold. It is a compound of gold and rhodium. I saw the polisher dip it myself (not leaving ANY of the jewelry out of my sight for one second mind you). It seems to me as if the dipping is NOT a 'coating of a white gold color' rather a chemical reaction. When the rhodium touches the gold after a few seconds/minutes, it brightens up like brand new. Much like the way in which silver is dipped.

Dont mind the quality of the photographs, look at the SHINE!

Sorry to say, this is actually wrong.

A good polisher can get out anything - unless it's an inch deep gash! What polishing by a professional does is buff out scratches by adding rouge while being spun on a buffer wheel. Unfortunately white gold can't be polished...or rather it can, but it needs to be re-dipped in rhodium as polishing removes the surface of the metal (very small amount, it does not change the thickness in any noticeable way) to 'resurface' the clean, scratch free metal.

Silver, gold and platinum can ALL be polished and scratches most certainly come out. Polishing in a buffer wheel/polishing machine is not to be confused with simply applying jewelry cleaner/polisher on a cloth and wiping.

Hope it helps!

thanks for that. I wanted to be sure that both rings matched so I had them both dipped in rhodium. It was cheap too.

Re: Rings Dipped

You can definitely dip yellow gold to make it white gold. I did some earrings. They don't recommend doing rings because rings get a lot of wear and tear and will eventually turn back to yellow. However, a friend of mine did her ring and it looks great.

Someone asked about polishing platinum if it has pave all around. My e-ring is plat. with pave and I won't be bothering to get it polished for the wedding. I don't know if it can be done.

Ha ha! I knew you would know! Because you'd also advised me about polishing when I had mine done (ions ago, it seems!) before the wedding. It was scratch free...but unfortunately from wearing plat against plat, my e-ring has been marked up on the inside (the side that sits against the wedding band). No one sees it, but I hate it. The jeweler told me that this happens to everyone who wearings rings together and that he could polish it out, but the minute I put it back it would return. He'd mentioned the only solution is to wear them apart, which I don't do......sorry for the long story!

Like my jewelers & co-workers like to say 'anything is possible'. So yes, an eternity band that's pave set can be polished, but it's not recommended because (as I explained above) polishing removes a small layer of metal and this leaves the stones 'exposed' and they can fall out. The band itself can be polished, but since so little metal is exposed the best solution is to have it cleaned by ultrasonic machine - it'll look brand new!
