Roman Catholic brides - Need your opinion!

Roman Catholic brides - Need your opinion!

We are being married in a Roman Catholic church in four weeks. Tonight we are supposed to meet with the deacon to plan the ceremony and put the final details in place.

I looked at the schedules for numerous churches and can't find a convenient time to get ashes today. I have a lunch meeting and can't get out. Everything I can find after work is at 7:30; our meeting with the deacon is at 7:45.

It being Ash Wednesday, how important is it for one or both of us to show up with ashes on our heads?

Can you reschedule or delay the meeting with the deacon? Call him up and say that you wanted to attend the late mass tonight and if you could reschedule the meeting following the mass. See what he says.

i'm sure the deacon would understand!

Call around, some churches have 'self serve ashes'!!
they leave a little bowl of ashes, and you walk up, read the prayer that is there and do your own ashes. Sounds bad, but it 'counts'.

Thanks for the input everyone! I called around and the best I could find was a 5:30 prayer service, that I might be able to get to.

We have waited so long for this appointment with the deacon, I can't reschedule. My readings, programs and musical selections all depend on tonight's meeting. I am coming down to the 11th hour with some of this stuff already.

I'm going to try to get them. If not, God will have to forgive me. I already gave up bagels for Lent. Isn't that punishment enough?

If it helps, Ash Wednesday is not technically a Holy Day of Obligation. It is a day of Fast and Abstinence, but not a Holy Day. So skip lunch and dinner and you're set!

A priest actually told me one time that it doesn't hurt if you do not get ashes. Its that you believe it in your heart what the day is about, they are just an external admittance to what you believe. I would not worry to much about it.

Glad I am not meeting with the priest today!

Thank you all for your input. I spoke to my mom about it, she had something interesting to say. She went to mass this morning and the Homily was about getting the ashes and washing them off right away.

The priest spoke about it being more important to be a good Catholic than having an outward sign on Ash Wednesday telling the world you got ashes. He said that it is better to do something good for the right reason and not tell anyone about it, than to do it for the wrong reason and display it.

So, I still might try to get ashes, but I'm not going to freak out over it. Now, I'm going to go eat a meatless lunch.
