Roman Catholic Churches-Will they marry us?

Roman Catholic Churches-Will they marry us?

Our reception hall is WWWAAAYYYYY out east and we live in Long Beach. Both our families live in Levittown. They want us to get married out there BUT we do not live nor go to church out there. Actually we do not go to church anywhere. I have heard that churches do not like to marry you unless you are apart of their parish or live there.

How do I word it to the churches that I call that I am interested in getting married out there? Alot of people have offered up their addresses to me to tell the church I live out there but i dont want to start my marriage off with a lie and especially lying to a church!

Why don't you just join a church in that parish? Make a effort to go a few times before the wedding. They can not tell you what church you could go to, even if that means you commute to the service. My friend just had this issue with her daughters religious education classes. She moved way out east, but still wants her kids to do their confirmation at the church she did it at. So they first told her no, then she stated the above and they said ok. I know plenty of people that travel over a hour to go to Sunday service. Good luck!

Something sorta similar happened with me. I was from Ronkonkoma, my fiance from Staten Island, and my wedding hall in Franklin Square. I was ALL over the place.
My wedding was on a Friday and with LIE traffic I was in panic that the wedding limo/party bus would never get to point A nor B in time.
I went to St. Patrick's in Glen Cove because # 1 I absolutely LOVED it when I saw a wedding there.. its a castle! # 2 (the main reason) it was in Nassau and close to my wedding hall. They asked why I wanted to get married there after I obviously said I wasn't part of their parish and I just said, 'I went to a wedding there and absolutely fell in love with how beautiful the church was and knew that is where I wanted to get married.'
They didn't care and they married us.

And on top of it, I had to tell the priest that my husband wasnt any religion and was never baptized and they still married us, so if we got married, you can! LOL

St. Isidore's in Riverhead and St. Johns the Baptist in Wading River will marry non-parishners

I suggest using someone's address if you can the church we are using charges a difference of $300 if you are not part of the parish. Are your families regular church goers at the churches you are thinking of? Me and FH are getting married at his parents church in Flushing. Neither one of us go to church anymore & figured since he did all his sacraments there we would not have a problem. His parents go to church ever week & have donated alot of money to the church & that is the only reason they are charging us the parish member rate. At our first meeting they weren't sure what rate they would charge us but then finally told us we could pay the parish rate (which honestly is still alot).

If the wedding is that far out, I would bet that a Roman Catholic Church out there would let you get married! There is no harm in asking!!

FYI- You ARE part of a parish. You have designated parish based on where you live. You don't have to have ever set foot there. If you live within their borders, you're part of that parish.

ETA: Lots of churches will marry non-parishioners but you will have to get docs through your parish

If your parents are part of the parish, you are part of the parish...

also, many churches will do it!! just ask around and start meeting with priests because each one is different.

you don't have to be part of a parish to get married at a particular church.
i'm from queens and Dh is from brooklyn, but his parish is uber small, more like a small chapel.
we didn't want to get married in queens and then have everyone trk out to brooklyn. so we went church shopping in brooklyn (we looked at more churches than RH) and we found St. Ephrem's. they charged us an extra $200 because we were not members of the church, but they still married us.

yay! st patricks in glen cove - thats where we're going. they're amazing!!! and the church is the oldest catholic church on li - sits ontop of a hill. amazing.
we werent parishioners when we first asked to be married there but we are now. they are sooo wonderful there.

also, i believe st patricks in bayshore is also good about this - as is the small catholic church in babylon village (beautiful!!!). and yes, typically its more expensive for non-parishioners; but see if you can join? doesnt hurt to ask!

Re: Roman Catholic Churches-Will they marry us?

Yes. You can get married out east even if you are not part of their parish. I am!! It was not logistically possible for my fiance's family to go to my parish here in 'western' suffolk and then travel all the way out east for the reception. I was very distraught about it before we picked our reception hall. I had called another church and they said I could only get married in my parish or my fiance's parish. They did not accept outside parishoners at all.

The distance and timing was one thing I was working on, I think its even my first post here on liweddings, but then his family just couldnt drive! My family was ok with it but his just couldnt b/c they're from abroad. Theyre not familiar with driving 'long' distances either and were not fond of the idea. Figuring out shuttling and timing from east to west to east was just giving us headaches too. I must've driven out east almost every weekend for many weeks to clock the times to see what traffic was like etc etc!

He ended up calling churches out east and explained our situation, luckily he was able to speak with a priest there and he was ok with us to do it out there. I am part of another parish so I don't know if that played a role or not. I really don't know if being active or whatever plays a role. He did mention my parish, etc etc.
On the other hand some churches are NOT open to outside parishoners.

Vineyard caterers should have given you a packet with churches that are familiar with them. There are catholic churches there. Call them for sure. Hopefully you'll be able to catch a nice priest and not just an answering machine! Just be super nice and polite I guess! I don't want to list or even mention my church in PM because I don't know if its proper or not to do something like that. I honestly don't want to jinx it or whatever. But believe me, check the list your caterer gave you and call.... I've seen their packet :)

Oh yeah, and a donation is usual. I don't know how much is appropriate at the moment...

Re: Roman Catholic Churches-Will they marry us?

Thanks everyone for your advice. Not only are we not getting married at our church BUT its on a sunday and its the sunday of memorial day. So i need to find a place quick that will marry us. Hopefully, since it is over a year and a half away, we will be good.

THANKS AGAIN!
