Perhaps no city on Earth is as rich in history as Rome, with sights ranging from relics of the ancient world to stunning Renaissance and Baroque architecture. Italy's capital offers 25 centuries of history and an almost unimaginable store of the world's great art. It is best visited during spring and fall when the weather is moderate and the crowds manageable. Avoid the city in August, when many shops and restaurants close for vacation.

It 's unlikely that any other city compares with Rome as a repository of great art and architecture. So great is this cultural resource that it's almost impossible to see even a small percentage in any single visit. Highlights include:

The Vatican museums: The Vatican houses the greatest collection of art in the world. Much of it's available for public viewing, including Raphael's School of Athens and Michelangelo's famous works in the Sistine Chapel.
Capitoline Hill: Overlooking the forum, the Capitoline Hill contains Michelangelo's Piazza del Campidoglio, considered a classic of Renaissance design.
Piazza Navona: Built in the 17th century over the ruins of the Emperor Domitian's stadium, the piazza is one of the city's premier attractions.
Galleria Borghese: Built in 1613, this palace now houses an excellent collection of paintings and sculpture.
No trip to Rome would be complete without visiting the ruins for a look back on the days of the Roman Empire. You can see the:

Colosseum: The ancient amphitheater is probably Rome's most well known image.
Pantheon: This temple, with its amazing domed ceiling, is a must-see on any visit to Rome.
Forum: The political center of the former republic and empire is now one of Rome's most fascinating sights. Unlike the Colosseum, which has a busy road running around it, the entire area of the Forum is closed off from the doings of the modern city.
Ostia: Located southeast of Rome at the mouth of the Tiber River, Ostia served as the city's port during Republican and Imperial times. The ruins provide an interesting look at the surroundings of working class citizens as opposed to the grander structures of the capital.
In the heart of Italy and just a few hours from Venice and Florence, Rome has the right combination of romance, adventure, history and culture to make your honeymoon unforgettable. Tomorrow I'll give you some alternatives to carrying cash while you're overseas, as well as some tips on how to keep your important papers safe.
