RP: FH was asked to be in a traditional Indian Wedding

Has anyone else had, or have been to a traditional Indian wedding before?

FH's best friend from kindergarten is getting married this July and he just ask FH to be in the bridal party!

We're actually both really excited about it because the bride and groom are having a big traditional Indian wedding and the whole experience will be a first for both of us!

FH has to wear traditional garb AND grow a full beard, and because I don't have the first clue as to what would be appropriate for me to wear to the ceremony, the bride and groom are going to go out with me and FH one day and find me something!

After the ceremony there is going to be a place for us to change (FH into a tux and me into a gown)

I think we're gonna have a great time!

I'm not 100% sure. They might be. I know the ceremony and the reception are in two different locations so it's probable. Anything I should know about the ceremony so as not to offend anyone?

well just br respectful at the ceremony. I not sure where you are going for the ceremony. I been to a indian friends wedding , her ceremony took place at a temple, and you might have to take your shoes off and sit on the floor. i think you should ask her fh whats his religion is first?

I think he is Hindu, but neither of us are really sure. We don't have too many facts at the moment. Waiting to get together with the bride and groom so they can explain what is going to be going on.

ok, then they are probably haveing the ceremony at their hindu temple. I think dress respectful , because many of them will be wearing tradtional outfits and such.

I think there is a thread for Indian/ Desi brides. maybe post on there and they can probably offer you some advice.

It sounds like it will be a fun experience to go to the wedding!

I went to a semi-traditinal Indian ceremony about 3 years ago. It was a beautiful experience!!

My boss will be having a full traditional indian wedding next year - Oct 08. I can't wait to attend hers. She just started planing, so I am of no help!!!

Hi - I'm hindu but i've never heard of someone growing out their beard for a wedding... thats interesting, but different areas in india have different customs, so what do i know

DH for our wedding came out on a decorated horse, so thats something to expect... also theres this tradition of the brides girls to steal the grooms shoes so he has to pay them to get it back... which can turn ugly sometimes (i've seen fights break out over this) nothing to be afraid of though hehe its just fun and games... so tell your FH to protect his grooms shoes!!!

btw im getting my PRO pics from my wedding tomorrow from SIB!! im so excited.. i'll post soon...

irish, feel free to FM me when you have more questions :)

Are you going sari shopping???? I'm so unbelievably jealous. I actually sent a text message to my MOH/sister before I bought a dress asking her whether our mother would kill herself if I wore a sari instead of a wedding dress. I really wanted one. We decided it wasn't gonna work with the kilts on his side.

Find out he is a Hindu or Sikh, because I think only Sikh has to grow full beard ( but I dont' think your FH need to)
and if he is a Sikh (for example he need to wear a turban in the ceremony) then make sure you wear somethng comfortable and not too revealing for the ceremony becuase you maybe need to sit on the floor and bring a scarf to cover your hair
and you can wear whatever you want in the reception.
If the wedding is a hindu wedding, I think you can wear anything you want unless you want to wear a saree. You can find them in Hickville or Jackson Height in Queens.

hey lori!

thats so cool that he gets to be a part of such a different experiance. i've never been to one but my mom has been to a few for her co-works/their children and she has worn like a nice Sari (i think thats what they're called) for the ceremonies and then just a nice dress afterwards but im not sure what religion they were. at any rate she always had a great time and said the the ceremonies were really beautiful. good luck with everything tho i'm sure it was be awsome!
