RP from BHB: NWR-LASIK surgery

I wear glasses and I want to get contacts for my wedding. My mom and I were talking last night and she suggested I look into LASIK surgery. I'm such a chicken when it comes to doctors and operations so I was wondering if there were any girls out there that have had this procedure? How bad is it? How fast did you recover?

I've been going to my eye doctor all my life and he performs LASIK. Should I just go to him for the procedure or should I look around? How much does it cost?

TIA

I have not had it done YET, but I plan on getting it after we are married. I have been wearing contacts forever- when my eyes needed glasses, I went straight to contacts. It costs a pretty penny to get them done. Don't quote me, but I think I remember looking into my insurance (they give you 15% off) and I believe it was somewhere between 1500-2000 per eye. If you can afford it, go for it! If not, contacts are good too! I am a baby about the whole procedure as well because youcan't close your eyes! But I figure if so many people are getting it done, it can't be that bad! Good luck!

I feel the same way.....but my main worry is 'What if something goes wrong??' You can't get your eyesight back if you have a complication.

I've had Lasik for almost way over a year now. I would do research. Just because he have been good with glasses does not make him the best for surgery. I was recommended to my doc by a friend, him and his brother and his Girlfriend and his her sister and friends before them went to this doc. I also sent a friend of mine to him and he was happy with the results. I was concerned with the pricing for Lasik but the surgery is worth paying the money for a good doc. in my research I have learned that the ads on the trains and in the newspapers using use assitants and not actually docs to do your initial consultations.
My headaches are gone and I can see the street signs while driving (NYC is a safer place now).
I was scared as well but the procedure took less than 6 mins per eye. No pain. I was naturally sensitive too light before the op and you are a lil light sensitive after op, so that is the only thing that sucked for me.
FM if you want further details of my surgery.

I had Lasik about 3 years ago best choice I ever made. They gave me plenty of drugs to relax me for the surgery, In which took 15 minutes tops!!! My lasik was covered by my employer at the time so it was a no brainer, everyone was doing it at work. I went to Dr. Basilice in Stonybrook, he was great. You must use PLENTY of rewetting drops in the beginning but it was GREAT!!! My FH BF at the time was to scared to do it, his Uncle is a eye Surgeon and he does not beleive on operating on a healty eye, but has no problem with it. My FH's Uncle suggested this surgeon for me, and he was indeed correct!!
And if its not covered by your employer, they have great payment plans. Good Luck

IMO, don' t rush into Lasik if you are not sure. WIth all of the wedding expenses, contacts are a great alternative. You can look into Lasik after the wedding and save the money for it if you decide you want it. My Fh is dying to get Lasik, but will wait until after the wedding since he has to pay out of pocket.

Re: RP from BHB: NWR-LASIK surgery

I had lasik surgery last February. I utilized my company's flexible spending account to pay for it(tax free money for medical expenses). I cannot even get blood drawn and eye surgery was a piece of cake!! You don't feel a thing. I was in and out in less than an hour, went home and slept (they gave me tylenol PM) then went out later that night. Best decision I ever made.
Just be sure to do plenty of research. I had the custom wavefront technology, not the PRK (one of the earliest forms of laser surgery).

Some places let you actually watch the surgery of other patients. That helped reassure me that it really is painless.

ETA: I paid about $200 extra to have a lifetime aquity plan which entitles you to any adjustments that need to be made to your vision.

ive worn glasses since i was 6 and contacts since i was 12... I would LOVE to get lasik. ive NEVER ONCE heard of a bad experience... I am all for it, but to each his own. If you have concerns, tell your doctor and let HIM reassure you. worse comes to worst- you keep the contacts...
its definatly worth it to research a doctor and have a consultation!

There's a Dr.in Garden City, I'd have to get his name, but 2 of my friends used him. He was the Dr. who basically invented the surgery.
He's been doing it since like 1980.. or maybe before that?

I wanted to get it done before the wedding, so I'm contact free on the honeymoon!
I hate being in the ocean w/ contacts, and the salt water kills ya!

Re: RP from BHB: NWR-LASIK surgery

I had lasik done 2x. Yes 2x... I have nothing but great things to say about it. The reason why I had it done 2x is b/c my eyesight was soooo bad I had an oblique astigmatism in both eyes (not a normal astigmatism). This is the reason why I had to have it done 2x.

The consulation is free and I highly recommend my dr. He is in Garden City on Stewart Avenue and his name is Dr. Kelly. The name of his practice is Kelly Laser Center. He has done my friends eyes (who recommended me to him) and he has done a few people from 98.3 KJOY's eyes. He comes highly recommended.

I want you to know at my consultation when he checked out my eyes, he did mention to me that I woudl probably need to get the surgery done 2x. Therefore, there are different plans and I brought the more expensive one knowing that I will have to go through it 2x.

Believe me when I tell you I was scared Sh*t! My mom went with me to get the surgery done and my FH thought for sure that I would be coming home just as I left, not getting the surgery done. I have to be honest with you, I felt nothing. I felt very comfortable with my dr. as he walked me through all the steps as the procedure was taking place. There is a point that it smells lke hair burning but that is b/c the laser is shaping your cornea.

If it was a bad surgery, I would not have gone through with it the second time. To be honest with you, the 2nd time was worse than the first as they have to lift the original flap that they made the first time. That was the most painful part and the pain was after the surgery. They give you numbing drops right before the surgery and you don't feel a thing. They give you a valium to relax you and it helps. Trust me on this. I was so scared and even was thinking of cancelling the first time around but I am happy I went through with it. My vision with both eyes is now 20/20 before this I was seeing 20/1000. That is bad!!

I will not lie as sometimes at night I do have problems with halos (just a little). But I also had night blindness before the surgery.

If you have ANY questions, don't heistate to send me a FM.

This is one of the best things I ever did for myself. I had worn glasses since I was the age of 5 and even wore apatch over my right eye to help strenghen my left eye (weaker eye). I love being able to wake up and see the clock across the room.

I would just go for a free consultation. I know they say if your vision is not stable and has been changing lately, you are probably not a good candidate. Also, if you have severely dry eyes, it is not for you too from what I have heard.
