So FH and I are doing our Napa/San Fran/ Monterey HM and he just found out his cousin and his FW will be living in San Diego and would like to spend a few days with them. I am clueless about distances, but it says on the map it is 450 miles from Monterey to San Diego. Does anyone know how long of a drive that would be? I am thinking probably about 6-7 hours if it's all interstate. Also I would love to add a few beach days to the end so is there any nice hotels/resorts on the ocean? It doesn't have to be right in San Diego, anything close will do. Oh and we will be there in early Oct. Thanks in advance!!

Re: RP from HM: San Diego Accomodations
The hotel Coronado is beautiful and on the beach right near San Diego. I haven't stayed there but, I have gone there as a sightseer. It's a little bit on the pricey end though.
There's also a really nice St. Regis in Dana Pt where we go for a conference every few years (not far from San Diego).

We went there in March--Hotel Del is beautiful---we went there for drinks and to see it but too pricey for us.
We stayed in Mission Bay at the Bahia Resort, it was reasonable, a little old but we had a little suite and it was right near the Beach and Boardwalk-great location.

Hotel Coronado is beautiful. I was there a few years ago and stayed at the Catamaran Resort which was reasonable and the grounds were beautiful. It's right on the main road, but inside they have all these birds, rare flowers and rare trees. It's across Mission Bay from the Bahia. (http://www.catamaranresort.com/)
I also stayed at the Pacific Beach Hotel. It's right on the ocean, but it's definitely a beachy hotel. We expected it to be much nicer - it wasn't bad, but it reminded me of some of the older hotels out in Montauk.
I would also look in La Jolla - it's beautiful up there. Next time I go out there I intend to spend a night or two there.

I'd say that the drive down from Monterey would be closer to 8-9 hours, especially if you hit any kind of traffic near LA. You may want to look at flying, you can usually find some cheap flights on southwest.
As far as hotels, there's a Hyatt in Mission Bay that's right on the bay. The Bahia is close to the water too. There's also a Best Western that right on the boardwalk in Pacific Beach. I'm not sure of the cost of any of those places, but if they are too much, there's always Hotel Circle. There are a bunch of hotels there, and it's only like a 5 - 10 min drive to the beach.
Let me know if you have any other questions, I live in SD so I can help you out!

Wow, I didn't realize it would take that long!! I think we would be driving on a Sunday so I wouldn't imagine there would be as much traffic, but now I'll have to think about it.
Are the beaches nice in San Diego? And what area had the nicest beaches? I am really looking for a relaxing beachy end to the HM so good beaches are at the top of my list

Re: RP from HM: San Diego Accomodations
From what I remember the beaches weren't spectacular. I was mostly in Mission Bay and Pacific Beach - Coronado and La Jolla are a little nicer. I think I was expecting something more tropical, but it was more like a Long Island beach. It was still a great time and really nice, but not what I had envisioned.

Re: RP from HM: San Diego Accomodations
I moved here from San Diego about 3 years ago. There is PLENTY to do there! You will have a great time!
Hotel Del is amazing but very pricey. There at lots of nice resorts near Pacific Beach.
The drive will take you about 10 hours. Take the senic route... drive the 101 as much as possible and enjoy it!!!
The most amazing views! If you can pan it where you are in Malibu at sunset, you will NEVER forget it!!
If you have any questions about SD, FM me!! I will be glad to help.
