RP... I know wrong board...but I need help with fred

does anyone know of a reputable trainer in suffolk that will come to your house.

I dont know what to do with fred anymore. He does not understand NO. When we tell him nohe barks at us and will even nip. He rips up the carpet in my den all the time and he knows it is wrong. He runs away as soon as we see him and he waits till we are not looking to do it to do it again. I dont know what to do anymore and I was crying about this before because I am so frustrated. We have tried bitter apple, putting him on a leash, and even smacking him...not hard.. (which just makes him more mad).

My mo watches him while im at work and she is completely fed up too.

Please PLEASE if you worked with a great trainer let me know. I know it is prob going to be a billion dollars but I need to do something about this ASAP

**sigh **

Jen, I don't know if this will help, but there is this guy called the 'Dog Whisperer' and I think his show is on the National Geographic Channel. He is amazing!
He was on Oprah awhile back and he tamed her awful behaving dog.
He sells a DVD on his website, don't know if that will help.

Editied to add the website for the show:

Have you tried a spray bottle with water. I know when my aunt was teaching her dog not to jump and listen to the no command she used a spray bottle with water. She would say know and at the same time spray the dog, which he didn't like, but it helped tremendously. He too was destructive. I'll see what other techniques she used, but I know she praised that one alot.

Also, the dog was already like 4 or 5 years old at the ime, and he still took to the new training technique.

This is not in Suffolk but maybe you can look for the same type of thing. I take my dog to a doggie daycare (I know some people think its crazy) in Brooklyn. Anyway they have a bunch of classes for both dog and owner. They also have a doggie psycologist who will come to your home for help with 'destruction'. Maybe you can call them and see if they have any recommendations in your area. There website is monstermutt.com the trainers name is Renee. They are all very nice and I think would be willing to help if they can.

I had a beagle growing up and my mom trained him. She took him to an obedience school. I don't remember where it was, but I can tell you this. The first thing they said to her was to get him a create. It looks like a cage and I KNOW it sounds terrible but it helped TREMENDOUSLY. It gave the dog boundries and a place of his own. Being a little puppy and having run of the house was too much for him so he too would chew up EVERYTHING including the legs on my mom's kitchen set (she was NOT happy!).

There was a whole routine she did with him. He had scheduled times he had to be in it during the day and then he was put in it overnight. It was like his own little room.

Also, they told us to only keep him in one room until he got bigger and older. We had him in our kitchen. It's a big bright room and we're always in it so he was hardly ever alone.

These things all helped. If you're interested, I will ask my mom if she remembers the name of the obedience school she took him to and let you know.

Hang in there!!! It's a hard stage but he will grow out of it and you will be able to train him.

ETA: One other thing. He may be looking for attention. You said he stops when you walk over to him but as soon as you walk away he's back at tearing up the carpet... It sounds to me like he thinks you're playing a bit of a game with him. Not that you're intending to do that!

The water spray bottle worked wonders for my dog when he nipped. I had to use it once. Now, if I pick up a spray bottle, he stops whatever he is doing.

Crate training works. Both of our dogs were adopted as adults and already had crates, so I can't tell you how to do it, but my FBIL and FSIL crate trained their terrier puppy and it worked great.

Also, try Positive Dog Training for Idiots (book). We took both of our dogs to a training class (in Seattle, sorry I can't recommend one in NY) and it helped a lot. Our trainer was recommended by our vet.

My experience is that positive training works way better in the long run than punishment. The only punishment we ever used was the water spray when I first got Louie and he nipped (to make long story short, he was 3 years old, but due to his neglectful first home he never lost his puppy nipping).

I had a beagle when I was younger. And he was also so hard to train. We tried everythign with him. We had to give him up in the end.

I suggest you look for a really good trainer.

I definitely agree with not using the crate as a punishment. I wasn't sure if you had one so I figured I would suggest it.

And you are NOT a bad mommy because he won't listen. Beagles are a STUBBORN breed. You just need to be strong and definitely stick with the positive reinforcement! Good Luck and I will let you know about the obedience school ASAP! Also, check with your vet to see if he/she can recommend a trainer.

Re: RP... I know wrong board...but I need help with fred

thanks again!

My friend told me the same thing about the water bottle, but she added a little vinegar to it and she said her dogs HATE the smell so I went to the dollar store to pick up a spray bottle and get this.. they had one in the shape of a 'F' hahahha.

So I will see how this goes.

I also heard of this website barkbusters.com and apprently they garuntee the training for life and dont use physical punishment. I am sure it is an arm and a leg but I emailed them and will let you all know what I here.

This is so true. I have a basset and a shih tzu. The basset has the will of I don't know what. He is tough. Beagles are similar.

I went through the same feelings and cried my eyes out when I first got my shih tzu and I just felt overwhelmed. It will get better! Has Fred been to puppy kindergarten? I think that the ASPCA and places like that run classes that are not too expensive. The basic training class we went to was great - I think that the humans learned more than the dogs in the class, but, now we deal with things better and are aware of when we are reinforcing 'bad' behavior, etc. The Idiot's guide book that I suggested above was really helpful to us. It is a lot of common sense, but it really helps to read it.

it sounds like you have some good ideas going....one more thing i was going to suggest, ask Freds vet for any trainers he/she has worked with....im out in nassau, but i know when henry was little, they gave me names of a bunch of reputable places for puppy classes! good luck....I know it can be hard, I take everything so personally when my dog doesn't behave!!
