RP: Those who have been to Riviera Maya

We were pretty much set on going to Puerto Vallarta for our HM- but then I clicked on another resort on the website I was going to use to book- and the place looks beautiful and its about $1000 cheaper....

I was dead set against the Riviera Maya because I DO NOT want to go to Cancun. I know it isn't spring break time- but I was there for a HS Grad trip and I'd like to leave it at that. I don't think of it as a HM destination.

The resort I looked at is 45 miles (or minutes, can't remember) from Cancun, that's far enough for me- but are there things to do in the evening besides go to dinner? Are there dinner cruises you can book?

What kind of excursions are there?

The resort is in Puerto Aventuras, which is close to Playa Del Carmen

Is there shopping in the area?

Please help if you can

Thanks!

go to expedia and act as though you are actually booking a trip- go through the whole process and it will eventually bring up the excursions section. You can see the types of excursions offered. I think Riviera Maya offers a lot of them! There are tubbing trips, ruin tours, boat trips, sunset cruises, dolphin swims, etc.

FH and I went to Puerto Aventuras last summer and loved it!! It's nice because it's within it's own gated community, so only people that are staying there or live there can come in and out.

There's a Marina, with restaurants and lots of shops - very cute. And you can swim with the Dolphins right there too. There are only a couple resorts there, which one were you looking at? We staying at Sunscape and loved it.

We also didn't want to do the touristy thing and stay at a bigger city like Cancun - this was nice because it was out of the way and more serene. I recomment renting a car if you do go there since it is a drive to the airport, and any other types of excursions (Mayan ruins etc) - there are tour buses that can take you on those types of things, but with a car you can do it at your leisure.

Totally recommend Puerto Aventuras!!!

We're goin there for our honeymoon... apparently its totally different from Cancun... I read tripadvisor forums everyday and there are always people posting about how they hated Dancun and everyone says Cancun and PdC are like day and night.

We're staying in a small, Adult only, AI hotel with pretty much no nightlife. So I know there won't be any roudy people there...just people who wanna relax.

As far as excursions... we're probably goign to do the ruins in Tulum, maybe a day at Xel-ha, and we are definitely doing a whale shark excursion. And of course we'll probably spend an even shopping in PdC.

We went to Aventura Spa Palace, which is 45 min-1 hr away from Cancun.

At night we just stayed at the resort. There were 7 restaurants to choose from - yum! They had shows and a disco so we had things to keep us occupied if we wanted.

We did do a couple of excursions. We went on a tour of the Mayan ruins one day. We also did a speed boat/ATV excursion that was a lot of fun.

I am like that to.. I am not into cancun however we are going to a Riviera Maya all inclusive adults only resort..THe travel agent I spoke to recoomended it acutally over Puerto Vallarta due to the fact you get more for your money at Riviera Maya since most of thre resorts are all new since they were rebuilt from the hurricane diaster..

During our stay there we are basically going to shop and go on some of the fun trips to Chichen Itza, there are free buses to Playa del Carmen and the stores.. . I just plan on relaxing there .. there are shows, things to do during the day.. I highly recommend contacting the travel agent that I spoke with and booked.. His name is Travel Tom @ [email protected]
and he has been to almost all of the restorts.. he knows what to look for .. if you tell him specifically what you want..
I am a very non-partying lol woman and I know I don't want to be around 100 girls looking like paris hilton dancing on top tables.. the place we choose is far from that and its elegant..

I went to Riviera Maya in August and it was fantastic! It was not 'in' Cancun at all- it is about an hour and a half away. We stayed at the Barcelo Mayo- Colonial side- it was outrageous! Soooo georgous- very quiet- the other side of the resort is more 'family oriented'- the food was wonderful, they have excursions all over- we went to Excaret (ecological park)- it was so much fun! The barcelo has beautiful botanical gardens- it was truly an amazing vacation!

We actually booked w/ cheapcarribean.com- w/ our flight, hotel for 6 nights, and airport transportation, it was a little under 2,000$ for the two of us!

I got engaged in RM last year. My FH and I stayed at Iberostar Paraiso Lindo and we had a blast. We took a bus to Playa de Carmen and there were many shops and restaurants. We enjoyed ourselves so much we are even thinking of going back for our HM.
