Our RSVP was aprox 5 weeks before the wedding.

I'm using 6 weeks prior for RSVP date because hotel block will be released 4 weeks before date, and I want the time to call those people who don't send in RSVP (although I should just let them get stuck with regular hotel rate!).

My RSVP was for 4 weeks before but I sent out STD cards 6 months prior. I mailed the invites out 6 weeks before the RSVP

Me too!!

That's a good point, I didn't think about the hotel issue.
