I've been wondering this too.. I think it really depends on your guest list (how many out of towners, how many distant relatives). My dad is basically able to look at my list and know who won't come. The only people up in the air of the family from Ireland. FH's family is all very close so we pretty much know they'll all definitely come. I'm not going by the 20% rule because I can't afford to have 10% say no and then I have to pay for that many more people. We have to guarantee 175 (I don't want even 176!!), I'm inviting a little over 200 at this point. Which is about 12%.

Yeah, I think it depends. I was looking at our list yesterday and I'm pretty sure that all but like 7 or 8 people will be coming. They're all close family and friends, and most live on Long Island. Because of this we arent inviting the 20% more to account for no's, but doing a B-list instead. I don't want to invite 150 and then have them all come when my minimum is 120 (and for budget reasons I'd like to stay as close to that as possible!)
Re: RSVPs
We had 23% altogether say no. However it was pretty much our plus ones that aren't coming. We gave everyone 18 and over a guest. Other than that we had only 7 true no's. So that was really only 10% true no's the other 13% were not bringing their plus ones. Just keep in mind your guest list and who normally shows up to your gatherings/family parties. We tried to keep our guest list to who we see and talk to often and it paid off :)

My rsvps aren't coming back enough to give an informed answer. But, I did invite people I knew wouldnt come and subtracted that from the total and checked out 20% of that to make sure we would at least meet our minimum.

Just remember after you secure the total number of rsvps people will cancel on you after the deadline
