Rude? mini-vent on behalf of my sister/mom.

Rude? mini-vent on behalf of my sister/mom.

My sister is getting married in two weeks, and my mother is having such a hard time dealing with his family. There are so many jaw-droppingly rude incidents to speak of, but the most recent had me yelling at my mother to finally SAY SOMETHING!!

His mom calls my mom and says 'You know, I feel so bad that you are plannig the whole wedding, let me take care of the cake.' My mom is thrilled. Something off her plate.

A week later, my sisters fiance comes in the house and says, okay, we picked out the cake, here's the receipt.

What?

There were major fights that insued between my sister and her FI, but in the end, the mom says 'Yes, I said I would take care of the cake-and I picked it out. You are paying for the wedding. right?'

My mom thinks she is just clueless, and keeps making excuses for her behavior, but I have never heard of anything so CLASSLESS in my life!

I am appauled, and I am usually one to just 'let certain things go' but the phrase 'Let me take care of it' can only be interpreted one way. no?

If my mom had known that 'taking care of it' meant getting to do all the fun stuff like pick out the flavors and taste samples, she sure as hell would have gone.

sorry, I was just floored by this. Back me up ladies, do you think we are overreacting?

I don't think you are overreacting to that incident at all but why wasn't your sister picking out the cake?

Not at all. They need a reality check. Your mom is a saint to put up with this as long as she has.

My sister is a first year cardiology resident and works like, 20 hours per day.

She is not very involved in alot of the planning-but that is a WHOLE different thread/VENT entirely!

I would never let my mother or MIL pick out the cake. But thats just me (and like, every other bride on the planet except my sister!)

Can I ask a question ? WHY isn't your SISTER picking out HER wedding cake w/ HER Future Husband ??? - Why would his mother be picking it out ?
Regardless of who is paying ??
I'm w/ you ........I think his mother is manipulative and spiteful. - your mom is probably just biting her tounge b/c she sees your sister and FH are ALREADY fighting and doesn't want to make things worse. -
But you're right, there has to be a breaking point somewhere ! Your mom is getting walked all over.

the mother needs to be stopped. Your mother should call her and say, if I am paying for the cake, I am picking it out. And her and your sister and her FI should go and pick out the cake that they want, and can afford.

I agree, your mom needs to grow a backbone but only when she has had enough will she do it. The audacity of that woman! Why doesn't she go out and shop for other things for the wedding, maybe offer her family free hotel accommodations or flights to the wedding since your mom is paying? That would surely take the load off your mother!!! AAARRGGGHHH!!!

If my sister's husband had a brother I'd think it was her inlaws. They did the same thing w/ her CP's.
Her MIL offered to make them- the ones MIL wanted to make. Then handed my sister a receipt for the supplies.
It was less then $100 and it wouldn't have been the CP's my sister chose but since MIL offered she agreed.

I'm right there with you all!

OMG! I would freek! Money is something that you have to be very upfront about when you are dealing with family...I would never say 'I'll take care of the cake' unless I meant PAY FOR IT. If she said, 'let me do the leg work for you' that would be one thing...or if they were not financially stable...and made that clear...but damn!

I would say this...make the rest of the planning CLEAR AS CRYSTAL: if they are going by tradition, then hold them to them paying hte rehearsal dinner and all accompanying expenses! make sure they know, so you don't get stuck with that too!
