Runners...Do your knees hurt?

Runners...Do your knees hurt?

Im not able to complete the run I used to do b/c all of a sudden my knees feel like they're gonna give out.

So FH said I should alternate running and biking every other day. But the thing is w/ biking (stationary), I know I'm not gonna burn the calories close to what I burned w/ running?

Im sure the rainy weather isnt helping much either.........

Anyone else going thru this? What do you do?

Yep, I had to stop running since my knees hurt too much. It's just not right for me.

What cardio are you doing in place of it? Do you find its just as good as running?

I have a hard time running. I use the elliptical machine, it really takes the pressure off my knees.

Strengthen your knees by using the leg extension machine. I haven't had a knee problem since I started strength training.

Tae bo, elliptical, walking, power 90 cardio, Yoga Booty Ballet (has cardio section), dancing, but no nothing has been as good as running for me. Tae bo is about as close as I can get.

Strengthen your quads and hamstrings, up your calcium and vitamin c intake. Glucosamine supplements might help your knees too.
Listen to FH and change up your routine for a bit.
Hope your knees feel better soon.

I agree! i ran a marathon my senior year in college and my knees have NEVER been the same. However, I've been recently training with weights consistently and I am shocked but happy to say my knees have been feeling so much better. Odd but wonderful side effect Also, be sure to stretch your hamstrings. Tight hamstrings combined with weak quads can do a number on your knees. Alternating with other less impact aerobic exercises is a great idea too (bike, elliptical)

Thank you. I listened to Snowboardgirl and I did the leg ext. machine. It actually feels like it will help my knees as weird as that sounds.

And stretching........I bet had a lot to do w/ my knee pain as I hadnt stretched enough (if at all)--I realize now how important that is, so thank you !!!!!!!!!

I never knew the quads and hams had any effect on the knee like that..

don't stretch until AFTER you are very warmed up. Or you will pull something and make it worse!

Good luck, and remember persistance is key! keep doing the leg extension 1-2 times per week!

I never run. It's too much stress on my knees and shins. I bike alot now. Sometimes it hurts, but for the most part it's better. If you can find a track near you with the rubber instead of running on cement that might be better.

Actually my ankles end up hurting. I started using the elliptical instead and I don't have any pain from the workout.

Re: Runners...Do your knees hurt?

I have a bad left knee (tore ligaments a few years ago) and it has been bothering me lately too.

I have been alternating with the treadmill and the elliptical trainer. It burns just as much calories, actually even more!!!!

There's no strain on your knees either, and it shakes up a dull treadmill routine!

Good Luck.

Re: Runners...Do your knees hurt?

I have really bad knees (arthritis since I was 14!) and running has never been good on my knees... but I do it anyway in moderation. I can say that the stationary bike is not recommended for people with bad knees because it puts the knee at a bad angle and forces stress on the patella.. if you do have to bike, do the recumbent (can't spell ).. and the elliptical is what I stick with most... one of my best friends!
