Running again yeah!!! but a couple ???'s

Hello all, humm I started back running a few weeks ago. I'm up to jog/running 2 miles at 12min/miles

I was thinking on the treadmill about a few thing and thought I'd ask you lovely ladies....

Questions:

Does anyone know if it is better to increase speed or distance first?? I want to be able to run 6 to be able minute miles to run with FH (yes he is an insane runner )

Also, how long does it take for jigglies to go away in bottom/thigh area. My bottom is getting smaller but I want firmness as well

Thanks for any advice!!!

I recomend weight training for the jiggles. You need to fill out with a little muscle. Eventually, you will burn even more calories running with some added muscle, causing your fat to go down.

It takes time! Everyday counts, don't give up and train HARD! It did not take me long to get lean. A couple of months. But I train with heavy weights. This is great because I can go a week without doing any exercise (rarely) and my body stays firm.

I am going on the treadmill now actually! I usually do 2 miles. I think I am going to try to do 3 tonight. Wish me luck!!

Cool, I am just starting to add more weights and reps to my strength training. You have inspried me to get back to the gym machines instead of dumbbells....

Good luck with 3 miles. I did 2 during my late lunch break.

I love going during lunch! I hate sitting here all day. Where do you work?

Hi, I work just south of San Francisco. We have an awesome gym at work, but I usually run by the bay once I get home at night. We are lucky to live right by the bay and there is a bike/walking trail around the marina.

I find it rare to get away during lunch to workout, mainly because when I workout I try to push myself really hard and it is hard to find enought time to both workout and shower during lunch.

My co-workers would not appreciate it if I didn't shower

Oh and now that running is starting to feel better I decided to get on my Stairclimber that has been taking up so uch room in my garage. Wow, that thing is tough-- ouchie!!!

Thanks for the motivation that it only took you a couple months to firm up, I will not miss a workout now!!!

This week so far: 3 cardio sessions and 3 weight sessions, I put in the 4th weight session tomorrow!

How much did you workout to tone/firm up???

MarciaD, To increase your pace, you should increase both speed and distance, but on different days. Make sure to do at least one longer run per week. And do some speed workouts on the track. The combination of both will really help you trip the 'jiggles' and pick up your pace. If you need some ideas for track workouts, try Hal Higdon.

I think that you should increase speed and distance together...little by little

one day increase one and the next the other

increasing distance will help your endurance
increasing speed will help you training (also speed helps raise your heart beat...which is good for your heart...and you will burn a bit more calories)

Hey Marcia!

I workout 3-4 days a week doing weight trainning, and throw in cardio on those days or on added days during the week. I have been doing this for about 7or8 years now. I train heavy, so at this point if I miss a workout it is not a big deal. I doesn't take much to maintain.

I need to start doing more cardio. I want to start doing 4 days per week of either running, or bike, or rollerblading.

I know what you mean about cardio durring lunch. I gey very hot even after I shower. I usually do cardio after work for those reasons.

Emdonlon,

How do you know if you are a good runner? How fast is considered good enough to do a 5K run? 8min/mile? Less? More?

You're a good runner if you cross the finish line of whatever race you want to run! Seriously, a good runner is someone who enjoys running. That's all you need.

Some people run 5Ks at a 6:00/mile pace, some people run them at a 15:00/mile pace. As long as you feel comfortable at your pace, then that's great.

8:00/mile is definitely a great pace. But no matter what your pace, please don't EVER feel embarrassed about it. We runners welcome everyone!

Thanks! It's not if you win, but how you get there.

I just started running. Now I am strting to run on the street, not on the treadmill. It is so much different. I ran the other day outside, but it was almost 90 outside. I could barely do 2 miles. But I tried. I am going to try again this week.

I am definitly faster on the treadmill.
