Ryan's Allergy Update...
Well, we went for the skin tests today. I just have to say I am really really really really really happy with this doctor. He's a pediatric allergist and if anyone ever needs a recommendation, let me know!
Anyhoo, we were in the office for 2 hours and Ryan behaved like such a champ!! He missed a solid food lunch
and a nap
but he was soooo great! The prick test was real simple. They did it on his back and tested for wheat, milk, egg, and peanut allergies. He didn't even notice the prick!
Well, here's the results. He is NOT allergic to wheat (so much for the blood test results
!), or peanuts (thank God!). He IS allergic to milk and is POSSIBLY allergic to eggs. The reason the egg is only a possible is because there was no blood test to confirm it.
So, here's what we do. According to the dr. 85% of kids outgrow the milk and egg allergy. So we keep him off all dairy products for now. I have a list of ingredients that I have to check all labels for. It's amazing how many names milk and eggs can appear under! In 6 months we get another blood test and depending on the levels, we do a 'Challenge Test' to see how much, if any, he can tolerate. We do this until the allergy either goes away or doesn't.
When I called his ped when we got home, she mentioned that most kids do outgrow these by the time they are 1 or 2 so I am keeping my fingers crossed for him...no good 1st birthday cake for my boy
...but, the news could have been worse, so I'm just happy that we can manage it for now and am staying optimistic that he grows out of them. Also interesting, the ped said that now she would either delay his MMR shot at 18 months or have the allergist give it due to the egg allergy...interesting, no? I guess there is some egg ingredient in that one.
And to top off the day, after 2 hours in the allergists office, we are all STARVING and sure enough on the way home on the damn LIE we get A FLAT TIRE!! Can you stand it? So here we are pulled over at some construction site waiting for some car to plow into us while Bob and 2 very nice construction dudes change the damn tire...since we have this crappy crank like jack that came with the car instead of a REAL jack that I keep telling him to buy every time we have a flat which in this stupid car has been 4 times already!! But I digress...what a day we have had!!
Thanks again for making me feel better the other day - especially those of you who told me you had outgrown milk allergies...you give me hope!!![]()
