I'm a third garde teacher and they just came and pulled one of my boys from our class because his father got arrested last night for beating up the mother and they released him from prison and the mother and my student are escaping to a shelter. He was crying saying how he didn't want to leave me. I gave him a stuffed pumpkin and told him to remember that everything always turns out alright in the end. He nodded through tears and walked away pulling hi backpack. Now I'm fighting back tear for the rest of the afternoon.
Just felt the need to share this...it was a reminder to me that us teachers really don't know what goes on in our kids lives at home. It also showed me how lucky I am that my biggest concern in life right now is choosing a matching headpiece and veil...

Re: Sad...
Wow that is really sad! This is why I could never be a teacher. I do not think people realize what teachers go through sometimes. I really commend you!

Re: Sad...
Thats awful. I am nervous about situations like this. I am currently getting my Masters in Education.
It sounds like you handled this situation very well.
My thoughts and prayers are with your student and his family

Thank you. Every year you will have at least one story like this that you know about and who knows how many you dont. It's hard because you get so attached to them that you can't imagine anyone doing anything to hurt them. It's part of the job I guess.

So true. U never know what is going on in someone's back yard. Its scary how we can get so wrapped up in the small irrelevant things.

Re: Sad...
That's really sad. Do you teach in the city or on the island?
I teach in the city and I can't even imagine having to go through what my students go through on a daily basis.
