sad

My FH just found out that they are potentially cutting 11 music teachers in his district. . .and he would be one of them. Although we're not postponing the wedding, this WILL put a damper on our plans to buy a house.

Pray that one of these two things happen:

1. he doesn't get cut (not very likely)

OR

2. he's able to find a comparable or better job in another district for September 2009

In the interim, if anybody hears of any middle school or high school orchestra jobs for next year on the Island, send them my way. . .

Not a happy day for him.

It's his tenure year, too, so he'll have to start from scratch if he's cut and goes to another district.

. . .and he has to be at school tonight conducting a concert--district orchestra night, he's conducting 3 out of 4 groups! Yeah, if that's not dedication, I don't know what is!

Sorry to hear that. What district is he in? My sister works for a large school district in Long Island, I'll ask her if there are any openings. I will hope for the best for you guys though!!!

Re: sad

I was just talking to my mom about it, and we both agree that no matter what happens to his position in Pat-Med, he needs to leave. We can't have this ax swinging over our heads every year if we're planning on buying a house and starting a family.

Re: sad

. . .and he decided that no matter what, he needs to leave. What the superintendent is proposing through the 2009-10 budget is DISGUSTING.

Vote yes, 40 teachers lose their jobs
Vote no, every teacher keeps their job

How sick is that???????????

unfortunately this is happenng all over new york state..its not a pat med or long island thing. I am so sorry to hear this an i hope that NYS is able to ge aid from the federal gov't. If not, there are going to be so many cuts it is ridiculous. We are both music teachers and will definitely keep our ears open. Check the NYSSMA and SCMEA sites hun!

I've been checking the NMEA site, too (I'm in Oceanside, he's in Pat-Med). We've both heard that there are HS orch positions opening in Syosset and Jericho. . .possibly Farmingdale. He's TOTALLY NOT an elementary person. (BM in cello performance and mus ed from Peabody, finishing MM in ed from Boston U online in June)

I consider myself blessed to be in a district like Oceanside where (so far) music is not going to be cut at ALL next year.

Thank you so much!!!

unfortunately in times like this we have to take what we can get ya know? We are facing cuts and I told my director that I will teach anything he puts in front of me. FH's aunt works in Farmingdale I will ask her if she has heard of any openings.

I'm new to here....from about 5 minutes ago, but I work in the banking industry so I know how things are. I hope everything works out alright for you 2. Try to keep in mind that everything happens for a reason.
