Sad news for me. NWR

I applied to go to back and get my Master's in Business Administration. Not only did I get admission to one of the top 20 business schools, I also got a full scholarship.
Unfortunately, I cannot take it because I am the major bread winner and there is no way we can survive on FH's salary. I am really sad to turn this down but my family comes first. I Pray that I will be able to handle this properly.

thats so sad...congrats to you though for gaining admission, that is a very big deal!!! Why dont you request to defer your admission for a year? Im sure the school will grant you it if you give a good enough reason. i hope it works out

I guess I am really sad. I am close to crying and I just ate a whole big bag of lays. It had 13 servings each with 150 calories and I just finished it

First of all, Congratulations!
You should sit down with FH and figure out how you can make this work. There has to be a way. Good luck!

I agree. There has to be a way to make it work.

most admissions and scholarships can be deferred for a year.... maybe you can save up and then do it?

Also, you may be able to go at night or part time? Many jobs will even pay part of your tuition if you're doing that.... You have the will... so you'll find a way!

First off--CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Is there any way you can defer the admission because many places will do that for you. Also, maybe a part-time job will work...and many companies will even provide reimbursement even if you are part-time...I know my company does and so does Citibank.

It'll work out.

oh my gosh What a great opportunity that really ***** that you have to turn it down! There is no other way that you can go to school and still have enough money to survive?

I don't know your exact circumstances, and far be it for me to advise.....but I truly believe that education comes first.
You're the major breadwinner, and yes it will be a struggle, but won't it be worth it in the end?
Even if you have to live in a mangy apt. for a couple of years and eat beans.....for the end results would that not be worth it?
Giving up this opportunity is not a sacrafice....the way I see it; going for it and struggling for a few years to better your lives is the sacrafice.
Remember....what you do is for BOTH of you as a whole, not just YOU.
By going back, fulfilling your dreams and having a better career in the end you benefit your family, not just you.
Is FH disabled? Is he not working due to medical reasons? If he is working at all, he should be able to make ends meet for both of you for this period of time.
It will be a struggle, and you prob. won't eat filet mignon for a while, but won't the outcome be worth it? For your family?
Just my 2 cents....

I agree. The degree will help you in your future and in the end will be worth the struggle. Your earning capacity will be higher so you would be doing this for your family. Yes, it will be tough for a few years but it will pay off. Or, maybe you can defer a year or go part-time.

Also there is alot of financial aid out there including private loans that you can get to help you out with the bills, etc. When I was in law school most people survived on private loans and then you have a long time to pay them off afterwards

I appreciate all of the support. My FH is not disabled and he is working. He just happens to work in Social Services were salaries are usually not very high. Deferring is NOT an option in terms of the scholarship portion. I could keep the admission.
I could go part time but I would have to pay for it out of pocket and it upsets me to pass up free money. If I take reimbursement from my company which is $10,000 per year I will have to stay there a minimum of 2 years after graduation which is only fair to them but most of the people I know get really good job offers right around graduation. The one's who stayed the 2 years did not have as much of an opportunity because they did not have recruiters around all the time. If I leave before 2 years then I will have to pay back any reimbursement I have received during my career there which will be $57,000.
Maybe I am being a big baby. I can get the education but for $60,000 worth of debt.

Maybe go to your bank and sit down with a financial planner. Most banks and credit unions offer financial planning services up for free these days. Before you have to turn it down, make sure you explore all of your options and you make a decision. The last thing you want to do is to be thinking 'what if...'

I agree with everyone else. I would either take our private loans to make up the difference or make major sacrifices like working part-time while in school, no cable, no eating out, brown bagging lunch, getting a roommate or moving in with family if they had room/charged a lower rent. Definitely talk to your fh because I know mine would never let me pass up an opportunity like that.

Re: Sad news for me. NWR

I'm sure there is a way to partially defer the cost... but truthfully, you should expect to have a financial pinch from grad school! Consider it a right of passage. I was in grad school for almost 5 years, and even though I was on a scholarship and stipend, I managed to still accumulate a good deal of debt (becuase stipend was 16k to 22k, which is obviously not enough to live...).

Even working in the public sector, I managed to pay off about 75% of it within 3 years.... that's just life.

don't worry about the short term hardships.... keep sight of the long term goals!
