OK I am hoping all you dog lovers can cheer me up...I am so sad, I had to put my 1.5 yr old lab back in a cage today while I am at work. Last night when me & DH came home we noticed she chewed a piece of moulding. (My house is under construction and the dog picks (OK eats) at whats not finished. So DH requested that I go to my mothers and get the dog's cage so she can't do anymore damage. (She had eaten a piece of the wall awhile ago) I know she is just doing this because she is bored and my DH dog never wants to play, but none the less I can't have her eating the house I know she is OK and actually likes her cage but I hate the idea of it.Last night when I said it was time for bed she went right in. I was so sad leaving her this morning. Sorry I am venting...Thanks for listening
One of my friends has a cage trained dog and she's fine in the cage during the day. Plus this is for her safety as well.
And what a cutie she is:)))

Oh look at that face! I heard that most dogs actually like their crate. To them its their own little house. Dont worry puppy will be fine.

Re: Sad Puppy (actually sad owner)!!
Im sorry your so sad.. but heres something that may cheer you up..
When i found out i had to cage my dogs, the trianer told me not to feel bad because dogs like the cage and its like a den for them.. i was not convinced.. so i never did it until the dogs started tearing up the house and peeing EVERYWHERE.. it had to stop.. At night they both go in there crates ( i dont like the word cage) My bigger dog hated it.. she barked and barked.. well i started only giving her certain treats at bedtime (shes good during the day so she only sleeps in there) these were her favorite special treats and as soon as i go get one she RUNS to her crate and sits in there..the other night when my little one was sick i didnt make them sleep in there and in the morning i woke up and she was in her crate anyway...sometimes during the weekend i catch her napping in there.. so it is true, they probably really do like it...i hope that helps a little.. and think of it this way, shes safe in there.. if she keeps eating things she should not who knows what could happen to her insides.. so its safer and she will learn to love it.. your doing the best thing in the world for her..

What a cutie!
Arnold is crated all day because he is a house wrecker. He hates it with a passion, but I know that he is safer in there. Believe me, when you come home to your puppy who is safe and sound, it will be worth it. It's harder on you than him!
Hugs to you both!!

Your puppy is such a cutie!!! We crate our puppy also and she actually loves it. Every morning we have a little routine. I get ready for work and then take her out for a walk. She runs back in the house and then hops like a bunny to her crate and waits for me to get there with her treat. Then she takes it and goes and lays in the crate. She's so cute hehe. The doggies are much more safer in the crate IMO and I know I don't have to worry about her during the day, so don't be sad

What a cutie. I know it is hard to put them in a cage, I've had to do it to my baby too. She actually got used to it and when I bring it out she runs right into it. I think it also brings a sense of security to them. I believe that they really don't want to do anything bad but the other half gets to them and they chew things, yes out of boredom or they are exploring. Trust me your dog is not going to not love you anymore as long as you take her out of the cage when you get home. A happy house makes a happy doggie.

Re: Sad Puppy (actually sad owner)!!
all i have to say is that the crate idea is not a bad idea... we have one that is just a little older than yours and that cute SOB has destroyed no joke about $10,000 worth of stuff in our house!!!! he's so rotten - but he's just so f****in pretty!!!!

Re: Sad Puppy (actually sad owner)!!
DH and I talk about getting a puppy all the time, but when it comes down to it we feel that we are away too many hours during the week and it wouldn't be fair to the dog. We are gone almost 12 hours everyday.
Can I ask..... How many hours a day are your doggies crated for? And up until they are how old can you keep them in a crate? When they are say, 2-3 yrs old and are given free roam will they still destroy the house?
Thanks!

Re: Sad Puppy (actually sad owner)!!
Kate, when and if you can leave a dog free to roam depends on the dog. My friend has a 90 pound black lab who has never been crated and is as good as gold in the house, and I have a 5 pound toy poodle who is hell on wheels and can't be trusted alone for 2 minutes.
Arnie's crate time varies, depending on what time Patrick goes to work. He's been crated for as long as 12 hours and as little as 20 minutes. He sleeps with us though, so he's not crated at night, or at any time that someone is home.
Examples of why Arnold has been banished to his crate...
He has tried to dig his way under my bedroom door and destroyed the carpet He ate through the bottom of my den couch He got into the laundry and chewed through about 15 pairs of underwear He climbed onto the kitchen table a few times, and has eaten: an Irish Soda Bread (but left the raisins on the floor) a pound of ham a pinwheel steak a brownie and the entire contents of my candy dish.
And yet I still love him to pieces!!!

Re: Sad Puppy (actually sad owner)!!
My chances of getting a 'behaved' pup are slim with my luck! I know 4 doggies right now that are age 2 yrs and under and all of them are house wreckers. Two are completely out of control. My friend has lost a couple of couches, countless pairs of shoes, linoleum floor - and the best Moulding??!! Another ate the seats out of two dining room chairs. How creative these dogs are! LOL
We are going to dog sit for 10 days in March for two of them, and wanted to do it at my house but my friend doesn't trust them not to tear up the house while we are at work so we have to watch them at their house.
We really, really, would love to come home to a dog every night but we tend to lean towards med-large size dogs and I feel like it looks like they grow too big for their crates as they get older. No?

Re: Sad Puppy (actually sad owner)!!
Kate, I have one dog that was very sick when we got her, and we couldnt take her outside, we had no choice but to papertrain her.. when she got better this was the HARDEST habbit to break! but i did,.. with the use of the crate, she is now COMPLETLY house broken.. she doesnt go in the crate during the day AT ALL.. she has free roam.. and she is only 2 yrs 4 mo. she sleeps in her crate at night.. and she likes to!
MY little one is hell on wheels.. he pees ALL over the place so i keep him crated all day.. i am gone by 8:30am, and if frank is not home, i am home by 620..thats the norm. i think...i will continue to keep him crated until he is completly house broken,, he also sleeps in his crate at night.. he goes in there about 12midnight.. (i keep him out of there as long as possible) some days i try gating him in the kitchen to see if he can now hold it.. he never does

Re: Sad Puppy (actually sad owner)!!
Hi Kate : )
Our dog is about 14 months old and about 60lbs. We cage her everytime we leave the house. More for her safety than anything else. She's a good puppy and hasn't destroyed anything (except maybe a few socks) but I would be worried about her getting caught on something or her choking on something when we're away. At night she sleeps with us and is out of the cage whenever someone is home.
She is normally in the cage about 8 to 10 hours a day and she's fine with that. As a puppy though it was a little tricky leaving her in that long because they can't control their bladders that well and sometimes she had accidents. I was lucky thought that my roomate at the time worked down the block from the house and would come home ever few hours to walk her.

Re: Sad Puppy (actually sad owner)!!
Suzanne, that was another possiblilty we considered - let him/her have the kitchen. Its pretty big, I could put two gates up at the entrances, and its tiled so easy cleanup.
Then I hear that my Uncles yellow lab ate the kitchen cabinets! And at still under a year old they have to push the dining room table and other barracades in front of the gate to keep him in!
I guess there is no right or wrong - just whatever works for you and your pup. It was just the alone time factor that worried me. Even if the dog wasn't crated I would feel bad that it was lonesome.

Re: Sad Puppy (actually sad owner)!!
I have a year and a half old Boston Terrier named Angel and she can't be trusted alone either for long periods of time. I'm just now starting to trust her for a few minutes (up to 1/2 hour) roaming the house unsupervised. But we keep her in the crate all day - sometimes from 8:30 a.m. until 6:30 - she really doesn't seem to mind since the cat sits next to her crate in his Kitty Bed in Angel's room. Let's face it, the alternative would be that we would have to give her away because she has a destructive tendency. She's already doing a number on the unfinished corners of the sheetrock in her room and that's WHILE we're home! You can tell she's up to no good when all is quiet (or when she comes to you with a face covered in sheetrock dust). She's chewed up some moulding and attempted to put her mouth around one of my new dining room chair legs (which I roared at her like a mad lion - she never did that again!). I don't get it - she is the most spoiled dog ever - has zillions of toys/babies (that's what we call her stuffed friends she drags around the house) and has the best Cat brother a dog could ask for (plays with her all day) and STILL she tries to mess with things that she shouldn't be messing with! Agghh! It's like having a misbehaved child in the house.

Re: Sad Puppy (actually sad owner)!!
You know what it is too, when I was a kid - everyone on the block had dogs (except us) and I never remembered them being a problem. But now that I think of it, alot of the moms stayed home and were with the dogs all day. And they also spent alot of time in the backyards (weather permitting) so I guess they had less of a chance to get into trouble.
Times have changed, I guess dogs have adjusted to entertaining themselves with table legs!

Re: Sad Puppy (actually sad owner)!!
I feel for you! Your dog looks just like my yellow lab. When we would leave her out all day while we were at work, she would be pretty destructive. I have lost probably 10 pairs of shoes and boots, had to plaster a hole up in the wall, thrown out stereo speakers, lamps, furniture...you get my point. We now have to put her in her crate every day before we leave for work. I feel bad because I feel like she's cooped up all day, but at least we have a dog walker that comes by in the middle of the day to walk her. Don't feel bad about it because I think dogs don't mind being put in there. They sleep most of the day too. Don't worry about it. I don't think they mind as much as we think they do and my dog always has that sad puppy look. That's how she gets away with murder!

Re: Sad Puppy (actually sad owner)!!
I just started flipping throughg posts and I read yours! Your poor baby!!!! We just started to cage luigi after 7 years and we feel guilty, but it's for the best, what happens if he ate a bottle of asprin or a poinsetta from Christmas? I'm glad you both are feeling better today!
