Looking for people's opinions or 'official' reviews/ratings as to the safest cars and/or SUVs on the roads these days.
Hubby's considering an SUV .. I'm not a fan of SUVs because (unless something has changed very recently), they are not held to the same safety standards as cars .. I think they give a false sense of security in poor weather .. and I'm concerned of the flip-over potential because of the instability from their build (too high off the ground and too high for their width).
I'm a fan of Chevys .. and particularly like the Malibu and Impala .. and I know they'd be good cars.
Thoughts???

Re: Safest Cars/SUVs???
they are making them with stabilatrac or something like that to help prevent rollovers. From my research the Audi SUV and LexusRX330 are the safest and bestest according to Consumer Reports.
BTW - VW Passat is also ranked highest according to CR for safety

Re: Safest Cars/SUVs???
My parents have had a Toyota Rav4 (4 door, Front Wheel Drive) since they first came out in '96. It currently has 139,000 miles on it, and shows no signs of slowing down. I drove that car myself for about a year and a half (some of that time was during an upstate NY Winter!) and Never got in an accident. It got GREAT gas mileage, and I never felt unsafe. I learned to drive in that car. As soon as I can afford one, I am buying one of my own (I had to leave it in CT with Mom and Dad!).
HONDA PILOT. for and SUV. comparable in size to chevy trailblazer.
HONDA ACCORD for a car. comparable in size to chevy Malibu.
top crash test results. the best name in reliablility. excellent fit and finish. among the best gas mileage in its class.
i know what it's like to be a chevy person as i grew up mr. american car guy. i have to tell you once you go german or japanese you won't go back.Government Crash Test Results
I have a Pathfinder (Nissan) and I love it. From what I've heard they are one of the safest SUV's because they are actually built on a car base. Therefore the roll over factor is A LOT less.
If you're going to go with a car I would vote for either Nissan or Honda. I think they are both very safe and reliable cars. For Nissan I would go with the Altima and for Honda I would say the Accord.
Please don't take offense to this but I don't like Chevy's. I had 2 chevy's and both of them were in the shop all the time as they got older. That doesn't mean they are not good cars, but I'm just giving you my experience with them.

I saw on a news show last week that the Volvo SUV rates very high in safety tests. They have the lowest chance of rollovers. They were priced around $40K and I thought they were pretty sharp looking.

From my research the Audi SUV
Audi doesn't make an SUV in the states yet...but I have to agree that Audi is incredible. FH has the A4 Quattro and it has been an absolute DREAM in the snowy and icey weather. Love their AllRoad.

I have one of these actually I have own two and I can tell you first hand that this SUV is safe!! My SUV was 2 months old and me and my son were in the car and someone with a Bigger SUV passed a light and slammed into my SUV. It was totalled and me and my son old had scratches (thank god). I felt it was so safe with the insurance money I went out and bought another one!! Love it, Love the ride, Love the way it handles in the snow (I have the 4wd). It did get one of the highest saftey ratings also!!!

I agree with Audi! I had an A4 2.8 Quattro in NY and it is the next car we are getting again here. They are so reliable esp in bad weather.

Re: Safest Cars/SUVs???
DH and I are planning to get a Honda Pilot for me once my current Accord lease is up in July. After moving to CT and all this snow, we did a lot of research and (in our price range) this is one of the best.

my results arent ' official' but I speak from experience, my SUV has been so reliable and AWESOME in verey kind of weather, we put good tires on it and it gets me through everything, I feel VERY safe, its a Lexus, and I have driven it in snow, etc and I am amazed at how weather is no longer a factor when going places, its great!!

I believe that the Civic is one of the most stolen cars. From what I remember hearing, people sell off the parts.
I dont know about hte Maxima but when my FH bought his the dealer told us they were having issues with people stealing teh xeon lights b/c they are $$$$. But I LOVE the maxima! It is such a comfy car, not too big, its like this pricy luxury car but we got ours for about 25K! (although we bought a 2003 and its the old body style!)
