this is what i've heard too - 8 months to a year for holiday weekends, 6-8 months otherwise - but i've noticed people on LI tend to do a year at minimum and oftentimes give even more notice than that.

Re: save the date
It also depends on how many OOT guests you have. All of our guests were from OOT, so we started spreading by email and word of mouth as soon as we booked. Our official STDs went out 11 months before.
WORDS OF CAUTION: No matter when you send your STDs, only send to those you DEFINATELY know you are inviting. This includes immediate family and close friends. Try not to send to co-workers, second cousins, friends you haven't seen in a few years, etc. Things change in 2 years! And you don't want to be stuck because once you send the STD you have to invite them!

Re: save the date
I still have over a year and a half left but next month we are having our engagement party. We are only inviting the bridal party and close friends and family (my mom doesnt believe in engagement parties). I will be give out the the STDs as a favor at the party.

Re: save the date
I did mine about a year in advance- our wedding was a holiday weekend. In retropspect, I don't think it mattered because people who recieved STD's a year in advance still said they had other plans that weekend and couldn't make it. Whatever.

Re: save the date
i think typically 6 months to a year. we did ours at about 7...and mainly to our OOT guests. i know a girl who at the e-party, they gave out STDs to those people and when they were within 6 months, she sent out STDs to those not at the e-party.
