I am reading Brides magazine and it said that you should do them if your wedding is in a far away place or on a holiday weekend. So I called FI and asked his opinion and he said that instead of doing save the dates and invitations, we should just send the invites out a little earlier than usual. What do you think? And is 3 1/2 months prior to the wedding enough time? TIA

Re: Save the dates- are they necessary?
I sent a save the date e-mail to my friends, so that they could put it in their calendar. I wanted to make sure the that the people I am closest to knew what date we picked, so they could plan to be there. Everyone else will just get the invite.

Re: Save the dates- are they necessary?
Im gonna do them cause I am getting married Memorial Day weekend.
Anyone know a good place to get save the dates. Nothing major. Cheap is good. I only need 20-30. Im thinking refrigerator magnets would be cool.

I didn't do them...they aren't necessary in my opinion. I was under the thought that save the dates should be used in very formal circumstances, for a destination wedding or for out of towners, or for a major holiday weekend. Word of mouth works wonders and I'm sure it'll get around to people that you are getting married. You could just send them to the out of towners since travelling during July 4th weekend can be crazy. I think you could skip sending them to local guests.

Try favorlady.com - that's where most of my friends got theirs (the ones who did magnets). I think it's something like 85cents each for the small, $1 each for the large. Just a word of advice - both friends that did them got the small and they're REALLY small. If you're only doing a few, it's probably worth the extra 15cents each (an extra $4.50 on 30 magnets) and going with the large.

Hee Hee The 4th of July is a month after my wedding.
Thanks everyone! Since the only OOT guests are close family (uncles, grandfather, etc.) I dont think STDs are necessary. I will put the money saved towards nicer invitations.

I am not doing them - I feel they will be sent out far enough in advance. Its not like 4/29 is a holiday or anything.
But since you are having a wedding in the summer, maybe you should send them out slightly earlier than normal? I know my summer weekends are booked up quick.

I dont see the point in doing them unless its a holiday wknd or very far, and hotel stay is recquired....I wouldn't worry...if your fh and you want to send them out 2 wks earlier then planned ur fine...
