Scar on Cornea

Scar on Cornea

So I visited an optometrist today (first time going to see this particular doctor) and she said that I have a scar on my cornea. She recommended that I go to see an opthamologist to get it checked out more thoroughly. She was asking if I ever scratched my cornea, but I really don't remember. I think one time in HS my eye bothered me for about a day and was a little blurry...but it wasn't anything serious. Maybe this is how I got the scar - I really don't know because it really wasn't that painful. None of the other Drs I've gone to in the past have mentioned this to me, although I don't know if they've really checked for scratches.

Does anyone else have a scar on their cornea??? Do they try to treat it in any way?? I guess I'm just scared about what the opthamologist will say/do.

Do you have any symptoms aside from what the optometrist saw? Blurry vision, sensitivity to light, eye pain, lots of squinting or tearing?
If it's small and not causing any major symptoms sometimes no treatment is required.
Sometimes they will give antibiotic drops or place and eye patch over the eye to protect the cornea.

Did you go to the optometrist for a reason or for a checkup/Rx renewal? Is it bothering you? What kind of problems did she say living with a scar on the cornea could cause you?

it could be from your contacts if your eye has ever been red from them. My sister has that from her contract lenses.

Re: Scar on Cornea

Thanks girls for your replies! I don't have any other symptoms, such as blurred vision, pain, etc, and didn't suspect anything was wrong at all. I just went to have a routine exam and wasn't experiencing any problems.

It just makes me nervous because I don't remember really hurting my eye...and from what I've read minor scratches on your cornea usually don't cause a scar, it's usually deeper scratches that cause a scar. Also, I read that some conditions can cause cornea scarring, so it just makes me nervous because if I don't remember hurting my eye then hopefully I don't have one of these other conditions! Hopefully the scar is just from wearing contacts and isn't anything serious. The optometrist didn't say what problems living with a scar could cause me. She just recommended for me to see the other doctor.

Everything will probably be fine, but I guess I'm just a little worried. I also hope that this doesn't prevent me from getting Lasik in the future since I already have scar tissue on my eye. I need to go to a primary care physician now to get a referral to see the opthamologist, which I can't do until finals are over (I'm too busy!).

Re: Scar on Cornea

My friend turned around to point at something and scratched my eyeball in high school.

I had to use drops, but I don't believe it left a scar.

Sorry that I can't be of more help. Good luck at the opthomologist. I hope that it's nothing since you don't have any of the other symptoms!

i don't think there is anything they can do, but i'm not too sure. i think it just sounds a lot worse than it is.

i just did some researching on goodle and here it was i found:

The cornea copes very well with minor injuries or abrasions. If the highly sensitive cornea is scratched, healthy cells slide over quickly and patch the injury before infection occurs and vision is affected. If the scratch penetrates the cornea more deeply, however, the healing process will take longer, at times resulting in greater pain, blurred vision, tearing, redness, and extreme sensitivity to light. These symptoms require professional treatment. Deeper scratches can also cause corneal scarring, resulting in a haze on the cornea that can greatly impair vision. In this case, a corneal transplant may be needed.

i'm sure its one of the first too and you won't need a transplant. lol.

HTH!

I ulcerated my cornea when I was 18- I wore my contacts for about a year and never took them out. My ophthalmologist gave me prednisone for the swelling and said it would help with the healing. I have a small scar too, but it has no bearing on my eyesight. My doctor says its fine.

My sister has a scar too where hot wax was accidentally poured into her eye- it doesn't have any bearing on her eyesight either. I think your doctor is just being overcautious (not saying thats a bad thing).
