This might be a really dumb question, but I know nothing about school districts......
Do your kids HAVE to attend the school district that belongs to the area that you live in? Or can they attend any school that you want them to?
DH and I are just starting to think about moving, and since kids are in the near future, we need to start learning about school districts before we buy a house!

Re: School district question
I think you have to send them to your home district - a big plus of sending them to your home district is your tax $ is directly affecting your kids and their friends will live close as opposed to having to cart them around to other towns for playdates, b'day parties, etc.

You can pay more to send them to a neighboring district. I don't think the buses cover them though. DH's friend did this--he lived in a nice pocket of a bad district, so his parents sent him to the one next to theirs. Not sure of how much more they paid.
ETA: That's in NY--not sure about other states.

Re: School district question
It may depend on the state.
I know in HS, a friend of mine moved b/c her parent's got divorced, & she was just slightly outside the bounds of the school district, but she ahd all her school realted mail go to her mother's house, so she could stay in the district. I don't know if paying more was an option.
I would say, people don't do that frequently if it is an option, b/c house prices seem to directly reflect house prices & seems to be a major concern of peopel lookignfor houses.
DH lived ina nice part of a bad district too, so he went to the elementary, which was in in neighborhood & nice & then went to Catholic school.

Thinking about it now...There must be a rule on how far you can go...Maybe 1 school over? I would think tons of people would want to travel even far to the best schools.

Ok - there are two neighborhoods that we like that are very close together, but have different school districts. We fell in love with a house that's in the school district that isn't as good as the other.
I don't know what I'm getting all worked up about; that house will probably be sold by the time we can move anyway!
OK, I just checked with a friend--some schools take tuition students--in NY you just call and ask. BUT, tuition ranges from $14000-18000, so is more expensive than many catholic or private schools here.
It seems that they have 'open enrollment' in certain districts.
Some districts also have the 'voucher' program that was debated in NYC.

I'm not totally sure but if you will need bussing find out in advance about that. We know that they will bus our kids to their own to school districts, but I dont think they will to others.
I know were kind of thinking of the same thing. We want to move where the good school districts are because my son is already 4 but they are so much more expensive!

Re: School district question
I used to work in schools in another state and it was possible to get an out-of-district transfer, but it was difficult. There usually had to be a compelling reason, like needing special ed services or if a student had personal issues that might affect why it would be better for the student to change districts.
