I know this is suppose to be simply worded, but I am confused.
Do you write:
Mr. & Mrs. J. Smith or John Smith?
what if they are not married?
Mr. J. Smith & Ms. J. Doe?
what if they are bring a guest?
Mr. J. Smith and guest?
Do you need to find out the name of the guest?
How would you alphabetize this?

I would alphabetize by last name...
we are going to write ours out like
Mr & Mrs. John Smith or Mr. John Smith & Ms. Jane Doe or Mr. John Smith & Guest
all depends on how they respond if it will say guest or the name

I agree with the above, except you really should try to get the guests name if it is someone they are either dating or engaged to, etc. I went to a wedding last year (my friend) and was already engaged to FH and the placecard said 'Andreaxxxxx and guest' and i was offended b/c she should've known his name or at least asked.
If you don't know who they are bringing (I have a few of those) then it's definitely Mr. John Smith and Guest.

Re: Seating Placecards
if you're being formal Mr. and Mrs. Robert Smith
informal Mary and Robert Smith
then put them in order by last name (and if there are two diff last names...i would think whichever one is on there first).
with the diff names u can either list the woman first or put the invited guest first even if it is a guy

i feel the same, but some people i don't know their dates name and they just write guest on the rsvp so i guess its all you can do at that point :)

I also have a lot of women going with other women, ie my bm is going with her other female friend and my one other bm is going with her daughter.

Re: Seating Placecards
I didn't do the formal Mr. and Mrs. because I thought the wives names should be spelled out. We only put couples on one card, children were seperate and I agree with the others, definately get the names of any guests. When you ask then the person will know that they have to bring someone too :)
