Send a gift?

Send a gift?

Just invited to a distant cousin's wedding that we are not going to be able to make. I am sending back the response card....do we have to send a gift? Is that what is appropriate?

Definetely have to send a gift.
That actually brings up a huge issue I have been having doing my invite list. My MIL is insisting that we invite several distant relatives and family friends - people she knows, but not people my FI and I really do. It`s not the money issue in terms of having to pay for them. I just feel weird about it because they don`t know us either and probably won`t come but will be obligated to send a gift if they get the invitation. My MIL thinks people will be offended, but how can someone be offended by not being invited to the wedding of 2 people they barely know?? Any thoughts?

You don`t have to but...

..I probably would. We had some No`s who sent us a gift and some who didn`t. I was actually surprised by the ones who did because I really didn`t expect it. I think it's a nice gesture.

I would as well...even if its just $25-50. I would not be offended at all if I were invited to a distant wedding, but honored to be thought of.

Etiquette says that you should send a gift

if you are invited to a wedding and cannot attend. Personally, I would send something off of the registery, but money is also fine.

I think being 'forced' to invite people is unfair. Your FH should explain to his mother that you have both decided that you want to share the day only with close friends and family therefore you will not be sending invites to distant family members. End of discussion. I told my parents the same thing when they wanted me to invite my great uncle and his family (these folks are in their 60-90s). I have seen these people two or three times in my life and they wouldn't know me if I robbed their house. So honestly, if they are offended that is fine, I never see them anyway.

When to send thank you?

This discussion just reminded me of something I wanted to ask you all. We received a whole bunch of no's and three of those no's sent a gift-should we send a brief thank you note saying sorry you can't attend and that we will be sending pix as soon as we have them back? Thanks!!

Absolutely! *NM*

Yes..

I would send a Thank you at the time the gift was received. You can always send them pictures after the wedding.
