I know i should have sent them already at the 6 month mark, but FH and I decided we would wait a little bit. They just got shipped from Vistaprint, so i'll have them this week.
Should I send them out over the next week or two or wait until after christmas so they don't get caught up with the holiday mail?

I had the same problem and made my decision last weekend!!! i wanted to make them a 'Happy holidays!' save the date, but I was terrified that not only might they get lost, but people might toss them, lose them in the paper mess that is the holidays!!!
Do you want to know what helped me make up my mind? I spent Thanksgiving at my in-laws and all they kept asking me is 'Where are we suppose to stay? are you arranging something?? Whats going on with hotels?'
I decided that Christmas is going to be triple the questions if I don't get them in the mail - NOW.

i would not put it off, getting them addressed and sent out may take longer than you think! such a pain in the rear! in fact if you haven't already, get all your addresses organized as well as proper titles, etc. so you are ready to rock and roll when you get your STDs!

I never sent them out. It was just word of mouth. I know people who sent out Save The Dates and the people said they would save the date, but they didn't so I thought it was a waste to send them. But it is up to you. My friend sent them out around eight months before.

I'd send them ASAP. Normally they're sent out 7-10 months before. You are getting close.
Once you hit the 5/6 month mark you're guests will be getting the shower invitation and shortly after the wedding invitation. I think the STD is only needed when you want to give them advance notice.
