I had a separate bassinet in my bedroom right next to my bed that he slept in for the first 3 months.... I kept the pack and play with the bassinet in it and changing table too in the living room for easiness.

That's exactly what I was going to write! I did the same thing.

I got both and plan on doing the same as this. I figure I can also take the pack and play to parents house and things like that.

I'm just using the pack and play's bassinet.

Is there a particular bassinet you recommend? Some look so flimsy.

well i registered for both but i only got the pack and play and that was good enough anyways because i rarely used it. she sleeps in her crib all the time since we share the bedroom.

We had both but only because I registered for a pack and play and knew I would use that for the living room and for traveling.
My DH made the baby a cradle.

But after a few weeks when I could manage the stairs more frequently, I put the PNP away anyway and did changes upstairs. It was good exercise and preferred to keep all the baby supplies in one place in his room.

I had a bassinet while he was younger and a pack and play for when he was older... I guess you could use the pack and play for a bassinett, but I think the baby might like being bundled up in a small cuddly place.. Either way Im sure it will be o.k.

Just dont forget a jump swing - they love those (that hang from your ceiling) BEST thing I ever had!!

We use both. She likes the regular bassinet more because of how small it is. A lot of newborns like to feel nice and snug. I would get both if you can afford it. But if money is tight I would just go with the PNP.

I just had a PNP with the bassinet in it. Not as small and snug as a separate bassinet, but IMO a separate bassinet was unnecessary. Our PNP worked out great. I kept it next to our bed for the first three weeks and ever since then Jack has been in his crib. Our PNP bassinet had the vibrating feature on it which worked great. It is all a matter of preference, but the added expense of a separate bassinet was something we didn't need and it worked out great.

The pack N Plays look nice. Are they really sturdy? The one that had the bassinet feature in the store fell to the bottom when we put a bit of pressure on it.

We had both. Maiah slept in the bassinet and I only used the pack and play as a changing station in our bedroom. The bassinet part of the P and P seemed so uncomfortable...I used that part to store diapers/wipes/changes of clothes.

I have never hard of this happening. Unfortunatley I don;t think you can rely on store floor models as they are not put together properly and have customers pulling and poking at them so who knows if the bassinet was in place correctly (well obviously not! )

Also, the bassinet is only up to 15 lbs, then it has to be removed.

That's true. They probably get worn out and beat up really quickly.

Re: separate bassinet vs. pack and play

We have a regular bassinet and at 26.5 inches my son is almost out of it. It is so great having him right next to the bed since I am nursing so I am looking to return the Pack N Play we received to buy an 'Original Bedside Co-Sleeper' which can be used just like a pack N play. I think its the best of both! They even have a mini one should your bedroom be on the small side.

DESC: This CO-SLEEPER... bedside sleeper with carrying case, allows for easy travel and storage. Makes nighttime caring and nursing for baby easier! Accommodates adult beds 22' to 24' high (from the top of adult mattress to the floor). Add leg extensions for 6' of additional height in three 2' increments. Simple to use security strap fastens easily in to place under adult bed mattress. Converts to freestanding bassinet, changer portable play yard for later. Three side pockets makes for convenient storage. Metal frame. 100% cotton sheet included. For infant up to 23 lbs. or until child is able to pull him or herself up to kneeling position.
