UGHHH first off let me start off by saying that i already tryped this whole post out and then realized i was not logged into LIW!!!! UGHHHHH
OK so here is the short version now!!! Has anyone ever used Windex to clean their ring? My mother has been cleaning out jewerly for YEARS with windex. She puts a small strainer over a pot of boiling water and windex. I have been engaged since october and have been using this method ever since. Last week however after cleaning it within the hour i noticed that my ring looked BLUE! (this was the day I went to Kleinfelds to look for my dress). I FREAKED OUT!!!! with some serious at home steaming it seemed to look a little better but was giving off a blue tint from certain angles. Anyway my ring has been with my jewler this weekend bc it needed to be sized better (he is not located close so I am picking it up tomorrow). he hasn't said anything about the color of the diamond. We all thought about what could have happeded and here is my thought....I have a pear shaped ring and my sister's jewler didn't see the blue either but thought that the windex could have gotten stuck in my front prong and from certain angles it is giving off a blue reflection. LONG story short...has anyone ever heard of windex turning a diamond blue??? i hope not....i hope my ring looks normal tomorrow!!!!
ETA: HI GIRLS!!! soo i got my ring back AND...............................................................
NO MORE BLUE!!!!....LoL....i guess it really needed a good pressure cleaning!!!! Moral of the story....i will NEVER again clean my ring with Windex.!!! Goodnight Ladies now I can sleep better!!!!

Re: Seriously nervous!!!!
The jeweler might be right about the windex getting stuck in the prong and thats where the blue reflection is coming from...I think once they use the professional steamer it will take out all the excess windex that might have been left over...Good luck, i am sure its fine

Yeah I agree with the jeweler...i dont think a diamond is porous enough to let that happen...it should be fine...dont worry!

I never ever heard of that. I wouldnt worry about it until you get it back from your jeweler and once they professionally clean it.

Re: Seriously nervous!!!!
Yeah that's happened to me too...that's why I stopped using windex...I would just get some decent jewelery cleaner specifically for diamonds, or just use diluted white vinegar. Don't worry...diamonds are not pourous...they're the hardest substance on the planet...I think whomever said that you probably just got some stuff stuck in a prong was right....you should always rinse solutions off the ring anyway...its better for contact with your skin. HTH!

Re: Seriously nervous!!!!
i googled windex and diamonds
How To Clean A Diamond (and Other Jewelry) Your original jeweler (with their specialized equipment for cleaning jewelry) is the best place to get your pieces professionally cleaned, and they should always do it with a smile and free of charge. But often it's not convenient and you don't want to make the trip. Fear not.
The internet and stores are full of crap, pricey witch oils in pretty packaging, and even environmentally-friendly suds you don't need to clean your diamonds or just about any other precious or semi-precious stone or metal you have. (of course, if you insist on the enviro-happy stuff, I support you, but you won't sparkle like you would with the use of good old-fashioned ammonia!)
The only 'professional' products worth buying are ultrasonic cleaners and steam cleaners. But for far less than the $100 these products go for, you can get a really good cleaning at home.
In fact, you can clean your jewelry with things you already have in your home right now. Two are in the kitchen or cleaning supplies, and one is on the bathroom counter and probably needs to be replaced by now anyways.
Get some window cleaner with ammonia, an old, soft toothbrush and some paper towels. The window cleaner breaks up the grease, streaks and dirt, the toothrush helps gently remove it, and the towels dry for a nice shine.
1. close the sink stopper (this should seem obvious, but I have had to take the sink pipes apart to retrieve an earring) 2. microwave/heat some window cleaner for about 20 seconds (a coffee cup works fine) 3. make sure the sink is closed (sorry to nag, but you'll thank me) 4. dip pieces of jewelry and toothbrush in the hot window cleaner 5. use soft toothbush to brush lightly, not allowing toothbrush fibers to get beneath the prongs, using care not to loosen the setting 6. rinse in hot water again 7. pat dry with paper towels (or an old t-shirt, my preferred drying tool)
The only exceptions to this are pearls, opals, corals, cameos, costume jewelry and some antique pieces. For pearls, opals and other soft, porous stones avoid ALL harsh chemicals (like ammonia) and abrasives when cleaning these items. Some places sell 'pearl cleaner' and similar products. Avoid them. The only thing to use on pearls is a soft, lint-free cloth. No chemicals, no treatments, no nothing.
The same goes for costume jewelry and some antique pieces. If your antiques are 14K gold and above and have no soft stones, you can clean them as described above. But many older pieces are made with less than 14K gold and incorporate soft stones and using ammonia may damage or abrade them. They are beautiful and already old, so care for them gently. However, if you have old platinum and diamonds, go for it. You'll be amazed what some window cleaner and an old toothbrush will do!
Actually some jewelers use windex to get the ring off your finger if its too tight..so i don't think any damage was done...don't worry...i think everything will be ok..you probably have deposits fromt the windex on it (like you said)

Re: Seriously nervous!!!!
I think that the jeweler is right. I would just go get it professional steamed and it should be fine.
I guess your advice is for us girls to stay AWAY from windex?
No window cleaning for me!!!! Yeah but I love to look in the mirror.

Re: Seriously nervous!!!!
I believe windex has amonia in it... which is prob why it works
I've posted this before but this is how I clean my ring
Amonia, dish soap and water (can micro for 20 seconds) soak then clean with a tooth brush.
