Seriously...yesterday was the scariest day of my life!
Yes the storm was only 5-10 minutes but omg....i have never been scared like that before.
I was tutoring in Bayside and knew the storm was coming so I decided to stay a little later and help my student finish the rest of his hw. Thank God I did because about a minute after it started raining we realized it wasnt a regular storm...things started slamming against the house and we quickly ran in the kitchen and huddled together on the floor...(yes its def weird now that I think about it....huddling with my student and his mom on their kitchen floor but at the time we just had to do what we had to do and wanted to stay as far away from the windows as possible)
I started to panic bc DH was supposed to be getting off of the LIRR right about that time...I called him and luckily he was sitting on the train in Penn waiting for it to move...he got off as soon as he could, realizing that the train was def going to be cancelled, and took the E train to Kew Gardens.
As soon as we realized the storm was calming down and passing, we went out on the back porch and saw the BIGGEST,SCARIEST , BLACK CLOUD that Ive ever seen!!!! I ran to my car and found branches all around it but luckily none hit me car....getting out of Bayside was like getting out of a MAZE...there were trees, branches, power lines, garbage cans, etc. EVERYWHERE...neighbors were gathering on every corner assessing the damage. It seemed like every road I tried to go down, I had to turn around due to some sort of blockage.
I picked DH up from Kew Gardens....i tried to explain to him how bad it was but he didnt really get it until he saw it himself....we had dinner and then went out for a walk to see how bad it was around our place.
This house was right off of Bell Blvd...i think near Pita Pan
This tree blocked off one of the roads leading to our apt
Both on Corporal Kennedy
I have a ton more that I'll post on FB later.
Does anyone know if they've determined if it was a tornado or not? I just can't imagine that it wasn't but still was able to cause soooo much damage. Whatever it was... im just so glad that most of the damage was property damage and that most people were able to stay safe.

Re: Seriously...yesterday was the scariest day of my life!
WOW... see we didn't get it nearly as bad out here (suffolk)
I was actually teaching a dance class when there's a knock on my door by a friend of mine (former teacher who was visiting) asking for one of my students.. i was like 'just one thing' he was like 'no.. she needs to go. NOW'
I'm like 'whats going on?'
he tells me...
WIZARD OF OZ!!!!
I'm like
now i'm thinking, okay the little kids did the wizard of oz at recital last year.. but what does that have to do with anything? or is he calling me a munchkin?
so I let the others out to get water, and all the talk in the lobby is about this tornado that supposedly was on a track for deer park. of course some people start panicking and we're being told roads are closed, there's flooding, we have to cancel class..
we look outside- it was POURING. i let my kids out early because it was so bad out and there was lightning and thunder.
i stayed a bit waiting with people who were waiting it out. i stayed by the door to let people in and out... yea, the lot started to flood because of the shape.. but the roads were FINE!

thats unbelievable! thankfully john made - what turned out to be - the last train from penn. it ran into trouble (storm, tree falling, etc) at woodside. they let them out. he took a livery cab part way, then took a bus. bus got stuck. so he had to walk the rest of teh way. crazzzyy

My parents live in Flushing....their neighborhood was hit HARD! There are so many street closures due to downed power lines! My dad took my dog out for a walk and brough his camera, he said it was unreal!
I had to go to Flushing for my first dress fitting, and it was AWFUL! I saw so many destroyed cars. I even saw a cardboard sign, you know the ones they write for garage sales, and it said 'We Buy Storm Destroyed Cars' - so sad.

I live in Bayside, that first picture the OP posted is two houses down from where I live, that tree fell into the daycare/pre-school and took out the cable wire to my apt. It was craaazy around here, I had to go out of my way all the way home from school (I left right after it passed through Fresh Meadows to head home) and there were trees down blocking all the streets. I was so worried about my dogs, my DH was home and ran around closing all the windows but it came through so fast he couldn't get to all of them and the wind blew the blinds off the window and knocked over a giant lamp and scared the crap out of the dogs, they ran away into the bedroom until it was over
They confirmed that there were two tornados, one in Flushing and Bayside and another in Brooklyn, and a macroburst with 125 mph winds in Middle Village/Forest Hills. The wind from the tornado made it like all whitish/green outside our windows and ripped the siding off the side of our apartment (like outside of our living room). It's crazy, it really felt like walking through a warzone when I got home, I had to park really far away because all the streets around here were blocked off with down live wires that had fallen into puddles and stuff, so dangerous. It's so sad that that one person died on the GCP, it happened so fast it's a miracle more people weren't killed or seriously hurt.
