Shoes in the house?(Idea taken from LIF)

When people walk into your home do you ask them to take their shoes off? (Will you when you buy a new home-for those who live at home)

How do you feel when you go to someone's house and they ask you to take your shoes off?

It's standard in my home and all my relatives homes that you take off your shoes. I would expect the same from my guests when I have my own place.

I WANT people to take their shoes off, but I feel uncomfortable asking them to, so I just HOPE that they follow my lead. I should be more assertive... in our new house we have hardwood so it doesnt bother me AS much, but I still dont like it, cause some people put their shoes on the table /couch URRRRRRRRR

If people ask me to, I dont mind, I follow their lead. I understand cause I want them to also!

Most people come into the house and take their shoes off w/out us asking, we have granite and marble throughout the house, and it's white...so it's a given.

As far as us ever having to ask, we allow some to get away with it, but heels are a no-no, and we usually do ask.

I'm comfortable with taking my shoes off upon entering others' homes, and if asked, I do so.

In our apartment, FH and I always take our shoes off. Not for the carpets (our cat has already ruined them anyways) but just to be comfy. I don't personally care if other people take off their shoes. Usually when I go to someone else's house I don't take off my shoes unless I'm staying there overnight (like when we visit my FIL's house) or am really comfortable with the person. But, if someone asked me to take my shoes off, I wouldn't mind since it's the default for me anyways. I hope all that made sense.

We just moved into a new place where the existing carpet in the most walked area was originally a light color. It is useless and dirty. FH and I cannot afford to recarpet this place for a while and to be honest, we will end up getting area rugs for the time being.

I do not like to be barefoot. I usually wear socks, but I would never ask a guest to take their shoes off. I would sooner ask them to wipe their feet upon entering my home. Though anyone with any amount of class would do that regardless.

i would ask if in my new home i had really light colored carpets (though i hope we don't bc we are messy). otherwise i would hope they wipe their feet. i probably would bc i am more comfy walking around in my socks. i babysit for someone who lives in a luxury townhome with light carpets, and the first time i went there she asked me to take off my shoes and i didn't think anything of it, but i do know now that whenever i go there to take off my shoes. theres nothing wrong with telling people to do so, its your home and your rules apply :) ~lacey

I think it is a good idea because it seems like the nicest and most neat houses I've been to are the ones where we take our shoes off first. Usually, they don't even ask us to, we just see the pile of shoes near the door and get the hint

I personally, would never ask a guest to take their shoes off! My friends and family thankfully are not too slobbish, and know to wipe their feet. So, I'm not worried. the fact of the matter is, rugs need to be replaced every couple of years anyway-get your monies worth out of em!

Good question!

When I was growing up, taking off shoes was so standard in my house and my families' homes that when I went to my friends' homes that didn't take off shoes in their homes, I thought it was weird!

Even tho it's not, I guess I'll want my guests to notice the pile of shoes near the door and get the hint.

honestly, i hate when people ask me to take my shoes off in their house. a house is meant to be lived in!

it's even worse when they don't provide you with slippers

I personally would never - and I hate having to be asked.

It was even crazier when we were house hunting and people would request it before they would let us in - and of course - i love my pain in the a** strappy sandals - and it would take me an hour. And I also think its kinda gross - all I would think about were 'what do these people do on these floors'

maybe its me......

i have hardwood floors so i dont expet anyone to take their shoes off

i dont take mine off unless asked to.
i prefer wearing my shoes- especially at domeones house- because my shoes are part of my outfit!

didnt anyone see the Sex in the city episode where carrie takes off her jimmy choos at a baby shower and they get stolen?

I never ask people to take their shoes off, but I do welcome it for comfort purposes. I don't mind if my house/apartment looks 'lived in'. I hate it when people ask me to take my shoes off at the door, esp if it's cold out and my feet are still cold. But with family and close friends I usually take them off eventually anyway, it's more comfortable.

In our new house, the downstairs is all hardwood and the upstairs is carpet. So I plan to ask everyone to take off their shoes if they plan to go upstairs - otherwise they can keep their shoes on.

Usually if I go to other people's homes I follow everyone else's lead (if everyone else is wearing shoes, I will wear shoes - if the people I come with take their shoes off, so will I). If they ask, I have no problem taking my shoes off.

If someone asks me too or I am comfortable in their home I will take off my shoes but most of the time I don't expect to go to someones house and take my shoes off. I wouldn't ask any of my guests to take their shoes off if they came to visit my home.

I don't mind taking my shoes off in the homes of people I know, but for others, I would feel a wee bit uncomfortable.

I would never ask someone to do that. JMO, but I think it's rude. A house is not a museum. I would have no problem doing it when asked, but I would never ask someone in my house.
