I feel bad! We are only having some family and the BP at our an engagement party, and one of FH's other friends found out and wrote him a half joking e-mail like 'Heard you're having an engagement party-thanks for the invite! JK!'
Now FH feels terrible because he was already feeling a little bad for not asking him to be a GM. I feel bad too!

I would just explain the party is for immediate family and the bridal party. That is what we did and other friends of ours did. Good luck

Apparently FH will be trying to avoid the subject with this guy from now on because he doesn't want to come out and say he's not part of the wedding party.

it is tuff.. I had a friend who did that and only had family but did not invite the brial party etc...some were upset.. and some friends were upset.. just explan you were having a really really small party...

Our 'e-party' didn't even have that many people. Just parents and my brother. MOH and DH's siblings all lived OOT.
People will understand if you say it's just family and bp. Maybe refer to it as a dinner so it sounds smaller.
