So, I'm having a reception for about 65 people, and it'll be buffet stations instead of plated dinner. I'm also having small cocktail tables that'll seat 5 instead of 8. I was originally thinking of not doing assigned seating, since most people there will be pretty close to us, and they'll all know a bunch of other people at the wedding. I also thought people'll mix more if they don't have assigned seats.
But I was reading the Knot, and someone said that they didn't know anyone except the groom at the party, and since there was no assigned tables they didn't have anywhere to sit. I looked over the guest list, and yes, there will be two couples like that. *sigh* What do you people think? Will they be okay if I don't assign tables, or should I just do assigned seating for everyone? Will people mix more if there's no assigned seating, or will everyone be more comfortable if they know where to sit?

Re: Should I assign seating at the reception?
thanks. I was just wondering how such a similiar topic managed to come up right after I posted. :)
But I guess I'm wondering if people have had it work for smaller receptions like mine where most people know each other, and in that case what which format they would prefer? I'm pretty convinced now that it's a big no no for larger receptions.

Re: Should I assign seating at the reception?
I personally don't think assigned seating is necessary for a small wedding. My sister had a wedding with about 50 people, and a buffet and did not have assigned seating..If these are your close friends and family they will have fun just mingling.

I don't think that you need to have assigned seating for such a small reception.

I'd do assigned seating. I've been to a small wedding where I knew 90% of the guests and we had to move chairs around so we could sit with people we know!

we went to a wedding where there was no assigned seating... it was really awkward and i personally felt VERY uncomfortable... almost like the kid in jr high during lunch that had no friends to sit with...

Re: Should I assign seating at the reception?
I have a very small wedding and I am having assigned seating. While I will enjoy the presence of my co-workers, and some other guests, I want to make sure that our closest family (parents, sister, friends) and next to us.
I just think it's easier. My MOH did the same thing to hers last year (also a small wedding). I only knew 2 people in her wedding except for the bride and groom and I would have felt I was intruding on another table if it had been open seating. I like the fact that I knew exactly where to seat.

Re: Should I assign seating at the reception?
My friend had a cocktail reception...it wasn't a small wedding by any means - there was 200 people there. It was under an enormous tent in her parents gigantic backyard. I personally thought she should have had seating...actually she didn't even have enough tables for the amount of guests there. Just make sure you have enough seating for all and you should be fine...I don't think you need to assign seating.
