Should I be worried??

Should I be worried??

My school College of Staten Island sent out a mass email the other day that I really didnt fully read, what I got out of it was that they'll be sending something in the mail whenever a registered offender moves into the neighborhood.

But I must have been real tired when I read it because it turns out they were actually letting us know that a Risk Level 3 offender will be attending the college this fall.

I got this description from a site..
Risk Level 3 offenders pose a potential high risk to the community and are a threat to re-offend if provided the opportunity. Most have prior sex crime convictions as well as other criminal convictions. Their lifestyles and choices place them in this classification. Some have predatory characteristics and may seek out victims. Generally they have refused or failed to complete approved treatment programs. They usually have one or more victims. They may not know their victim(s). The crime may show a manifest cruelty to the victim(s) and these offenders usually deny or minimize the crime. These offenders commonly have clear indications of a personality disorder.

Now my school campus has a daycare and a highschool on site. What is the school board thinking?? I know theres sex offenders everywhere but this is just bothering me to no end.

Wow that is messed up.. You should complain to the school.

I would complain and get some others (students faculty, parents) and start a petition.... they shouldn't compromise the safety of hundreds or even thousands (IDK how big your school is) so a sex offender can go to school! That's not fair to everyone else.

I would be up someones behind about this!!!

When I was in HS a sex offender moved in a block away from the school. The kids at my school would stand outside his house and harass him and a few weeks later he moved out.

Re: Should I be worried??

Copy of the email below.....Are they going to have a cop walk around with the guy all day to know hes not going to go near the day care center? Come on now. And they havent released a picture. Everyone has to go out of their way and go to public safety to get more information and who knows if they'll share a picture.

New York State law requires that after a sex offender has been released from prison, the State Division of Criminal Justice must notify a college in which an offender matriculates as a student. In light of this legal requirement, the state has informed CSI’s Office of Public Safety that a Level 3 sex offender is attending the College of Staten Island .
In the case of a Level 3 sex offender -- defined as a person with a high “risk of re-offense” -- the law allows the administration to make known to the entire college community the presence of the offender on campus. Pursuant to this law, the administration is providing more specific information about the offender to those who request it through the College’s Office of Public Safety (Building 2A, room 108). In addition, certain areas of the campus, including the Children’s Center, the Sports and Recreation Center , and the College of Staten Island High School for International Studies are strictly off-limits to the offender at any time. College officials have also met with the offender to detail all restrictions that will apply on the CSI campus.

Wow..I know I'd be scared!

They should at least release his picture or something so that you are aware of who you walk alone in the halls with.

They seriously, shouldn't even be let around schools..

Re: Should I be worried??

unfortunately there is not a whole lot that can be done to prevent this person from being a student at the school.....even if this person was not a student, most people can easily get onto any campus.....all they have to do is walk in....people hold the door for people all the time.....unfortunately a nice gesture can be a bbig mistake.....no matter what...always be cautious, not afraid....this day and age we should all travel at least in pairs.....if not more. Most schools offer to have security guards walk you to your car if you feel uncomfortable use this option.....better safe than sorry! I always walk with one key between my ring finger and second finger and a cell phone in my other hand.....do not walk and talk on the cell at the same time....it is distracting and can cause more problems for you. ok ladies that is my safety lecture for the day....

Its crazy that they say a Level 3 is at high risk for re-offense and you're supposed to be okay with that?? Maybe someone can start a petition and get it signed to have this person thrown out. How is it okay for them to stick this person back into an environment where he cant control himself?? I will never understand the system...

thats disgusting and horrible!!! there might not be much you can do since i think the only thing that a sex offender actually has to do it register as a sex offender... i'm not sure they can deny them an education - BUT i would NOT be okay with sharing a campus with him!!!

i would write a letter or take some sort of group action!

good luck! please stay safe!!

I don't think they school can kick the student out of the college for this. Yes it is disgusting and scary and I'm sure the school will be watching this person like a hawk as everyone should have their guard up.

Re: Should I be worried??

Who the he!l would admit a student that would serve as a potential risk to other students!?!??!!

That seems so freaking irresponsible of the school.

I would ABSOLUTELY start a petition. I bet you can find an example of one online somewhere...

The thing is though, how many people are on campus that are the same as this guy and have never been convicted.

They send notices home to my brother all the time..its scary!

People are just CRAZY in this world today!

oh my, I'm not sure what I would do about this if I were in your shoes. I'm glad to know they really do let you know though. I don't even really know what to say, I hope they don't let whomever go to your school!

Re: Should I be worried??

should you be worried is a good question? I really can't say, its one thing to have a threatening person around without knowing but if you are made aware you are that much more prepared if and when...still tough though, the position to be against someone that wronged in the past has to be contemplated, because it speaks volumes as to what kind of people we are. The question becomes are we a society that believes in no second chances, that all of those that have wronged in the past are incapable of changing and turning a new leaf for the future? Like I said to be contemplated before jumping to a decision...

I am really happy that our minister has been with fh & I because this really comes from a conversation with him. I told him I have a hard time forgiving and he reminded me that Jesus died for forgiveness of all our sins, now if he did that what is the lesson he wanted to us to learn?, it is up to us he said.

This is just my own rant, thoughts, no need to disagree, I know we have to agree to disagree on somethings, this is a definite one for those

Re: Should I be worried??

I am not really sure what can be done about it

Any peek at a sex offender website shows THOUSANDS - there is no neighborhood you can move to that does not have a registered sex offender in it

Also, I know they are not supposed to live near schools and playgrounds but I can walk to THREE schools and TWO playgrounds ( off the top of my head ).

So really - where are they supposed to live? What are they supposed to do? I agree that I want them NOWHERE near ME or my family. But once they have served their time - there is really nothing that can be done to stop them from reentering society.

What also bothers me is a recent story i read about a young boy that has to register as a sex offender for slapping a girl's behind. . . he will be labelled for the rest of his life because of some stupid thing that so many guys have done.
