Should the Yankees trade for Randy Johnson?

Should the Yankees trade for Randy Johnson?

I don't think it's a good trade. While Johnson is an incredible pitcher I think he's too old to get now. They would have to trade prospects for him and I don't think trading the future away is the best idea right now. They've traded a lot of youth over the last couple of years and really depleted their farm system.

I think that we should because if he goes somewhere else (like Boston or Anaheim) we are going to have to face him. If he comes to the Yankees then he is on our side. He may be older but he can still pitch and right now with Kevin Brown being sick, Mike Mussina's elbow hurting him, etc. we could use him.

I agree with Lisa. Given what happened when Schilling and Johnson teamed up against the Yankees with the D'backs, I definitely don't want to see Boston get him.

Then again, maybe Boston's attempt to replicate the D'backs 2001 success would backfire on them. Johnson is NOT a nice man, supposedly, and the last thing Boston needs is more strife in their dugout. They already have so many egomaniacs on that team. I may be overestimating the effects of team character on performance, though.

I don't think you are overestimating the affects of character on performance. The Yanks don't play well when they get cocky. No one plays well when they are cocky.

I just think that if he is playing for another team then that is a challenge that we will have to face to get to where we want to go but if he is on our team then we don't have to face that challenge.

It definitely wouldn't be bad to have him, if they don't trade someone that is good for the team now. I heard that Posada might be a part of that trade, which do not like at all

Yeah but he wont waive his trade clause for Boston. He doesn't like Schilling and he wants to go to a first place team or a team close to first. Boston is 7 games out of first. He wont agree to go there.

I think he's a great pitcher but I think you're solving a problem for a year. In another year they're going to have to make more trades or more signings for pitchers. And they are giving away their farm system right now.

I think they are waiting for another start from El Duque to see if he's as good as he was in the first game. If he is I think the Yankees will walk from Johnson.

If they get rid of Posada they are nuts. Just like I thought they were nuts to give up Soriano as part of the deal for A-Rod

I have very mixed feeling about the Johnson situation ... personally I'd rather not see him as a Yankee and it continually annoys me (as a Yankee fan) that they try to go for players like him when they should really worry about young talent and building the team in different areas ...

I haven't heard Posada's name at all in trade rumors. I don't think they would trade him though. He's way too good of a catcher.

I did not hear his name mentioned either and I agree with you.

I think as a trade it wouldnt be a good idea. But I think as a crowd pleaser more people would come out to see him pitch.

Looks like Johnson had a change of heart about Boston. This is from the NY Post today:

The Yankees are one of five teams officially told by the Diamondbacks they are thinking about trading Randy Johnson.
GM Brian Cashman wouldn't comment when asked if the Diamondbacks informed the Yankees they are going to deal the flame-throwing lefty, but an industry source with knowledge of the Diamondbacks' game plan said the Yankees have been told by Arizona it will entertain offers for Johnson and he could be dealt before the July 31 waiver trading deadline.

The Red Sox, Angels, White Sox and Cubs received the same message.
