On the right side of the basket she has attached a bag with red and white petals to throw along the aisle.

I didn't have a fg basket, but a kissing ball. John from Flower Michele made it for me...

The one in the middle was the one my FGs carried. They didn't have petals though. My flowergirls carried short stem roses lain across the basket... that's why it's wider basket.

All these are for sale though if anyone's interested!

Obviously I haven't been to many weddings or I wasn't paying attention when I should have.

Do flower girls actually do anything with flowers? Are they dropping petals? I have no recollection of them doing that?

But one of the pictures on this thread look like the flower girl is dropping petals....

I really dont recall....

Usually the flower girls do drop petals as they walk down the aisle. This way, there will be a trail of petals that the bride will then walk on.

Sometimes, because the flowergirls are young, they may get nervous and not remember to put the petals and also some churches don't allow petals to be put on the floor.

You can choose whatever you want them to do.

Here are two photos of mine - the first gives a good view of the flowers and the second of the basket itself. The basket was from Victoria's Secret. We didn't have rose petals as our church wouldn't allow the girls to throw them. The flower girl tiara is also in the photos. One of the girls bent the handle.
